Because of some confusion between the owners manuel and the warranty book I went to the dealer the other day to try and get the answer. My owners manuel says to change the fluid in the Aisin transmission every 30,000 miles, (I am getting close) the warranty manuel says to change it every 60,000 miles. Turns out that the warranty book is right. Under severe service, heavy towing ect, it is changed every 60k. Under normal duty the fluid is changed every 120k. Sounds like they are fairly confident of the Aisin transmission. Good thing the fluid change is 60k, they don't even have any filters in the warehouse in Dallas. The filters cost $101. 00, the gaskets for the transmission is not supposed to be reused and a new one cost $48. 00, and the fluid cost $9. 60 a qt. , it takes 8 qts. A fairly expensive operation, don't know what the dealer might charge for doing it. I'll be doing my own.

The transmission has held up well this winter, I hope it will do as well this summer in south Texas when it gets good and hot.

If you are asking how much torque the transmission can handle, I don't know. I believe that it is the same transmission that is in the medium duty Izuzu, (don't know if that is spelled right) and Toyota cab over trucks and some of them carry pretty heavy loads. Maybe someone else can chime in with the torque ratings.

Make sure your suppose to change the filter on a service. The Jeep Cherokees have the Asisn. The filter is only changed on a major repair. Its a steel/brass filter that IS NOT serviced during normal operation. Only the fliud is. In fact on the Cherokess its a somewhat of a pain to remove and can actually just be cleaned in a parts washer. Then again on Cherokees we just hooked them to a fliud exchange and pumped old out and new in.

You actually flushed out an AW-4? Hell I've always just drained the pan and put 4 qts back in... had 4 of them with close to 200K miles with no issues.

In reference to the 6 spd in the dodges... I'd check to see if it's the same type of filter. I agree with the above posts that if it is I wouldn't bother messing with it... especially for $101.

Heavy work vehicles,Mail Jeeps etc. throwing a few qts in them is like waiting for oil to settle and pouring some back in off the top. We ALWAYS used a fliud exchange on the AW4 or customers swore you didn't drain and refill when they pulled the dipstick out and looked. Mail carriers would do a lip stand as it was still black and burnt. With all NEW fliud all was happy and the trans DID shift and perform better.

It will tickle me to death if I don't have to change that high $ filter. Also the pan on the Aisin transmission has a drain plug on it so I won't have to take a bath in transmission fluid when I remove it.

Awww, come on now, thats half the fun !!! :-laf

When I took the Asin class last month the pan gaskets were NOT reusable. They appeared to be a composite material. And the filter did not appear to be metal mesh.

I'm waiting for the answer also.

I'm not rolling up the miles on this one like I did for the previous three years so it will be two or three years before I reach 120k miles on mine.

Changed mine at 50,400, and again at 115,500, a little overdue. Changed the filter both times. The filter looks pretty much just like the ones in the old Dodge transmissions, don't know why they cost so much. I believe they call for 8 qts. for the change but mine took more than that. The gasket can be reused, but you will have to clean the pan and stick the gasket to it with a gasket glue, otherwise it will drip all over you and everything else while you try to line up the holes. It is pretty much a straight forward filter and oil change.

Thanks EB. I guess you are and will remain the pioneer c&c/Aisin owner among us and will probably always be the owner with the most miles. We'll all learn from your lead.

I ran into a guy at a oil rig today that isn't very far behind me. Only difference between him and me is that he had a 6-speed and a different bed with a quad cab C&C. He was less than 10k behind me. I rolled over 150k today. There are going to be a few things deleted off mine in the very near future.

Wonder what that could possibly be??!! :-laf

I think I'm gonna do a change pretty soon. Dealer said drain/refill is about that 8qts mentioned above while a rebuild takes 14qts. Is it worth it if you can only get 1/2 out?
