Im looking at two identical auto 4x4 2500's but one has 4:10 gears and Im trying to get the best MPG i can I do 74 percent high way driving BUT I allso want to go with bigger ties than stock... ... ... ...

does any one have 4:10 gears?? what mpg empty can i expect out of it?? average verses jut hi way?

You have to give us a little more info on the trucks. What year. . 03/04 or 04. 5 and up? I would think that with that much hwy driving the 3. 73's would do better for you mileage-wise. .

If you'r planning on installing 35s or 37s you may be better off with 4. 10s. For the best fuel economy 3. 73s and 385s but no bigger than 33s.

From what know & had read , its to bad that you can not get the the 3:55 after ?? date about 3rd gen. , the 4:10 get about 15 mpg [ but that varies a lot depending on many things ] , the tires will make for better up to a point than it takes more HPs to roll bigger tires .

Ive got a 06 2wd with 4:10 and I put 285's on and I am getting around 17 in town. I had a 03 with 3:73 gears and put 315's on and it was better. If I had to do over I would get the 3:73's.

I have 4. 10's with 265. 70 17's and I am getting ***** fuel milage (14-15) I am thinking about some 35" tires/. . 265. 70. 17 are about 31. 4"

I have an 05 nv5600 with 3. 73 and 285 cooper stt ( great tire by the way) I routinely get 20-22 on the highway and around 17-18 in town Those #'s are done by hand. It would be a mistake to go with 4. 10 unless you are going to be towing all the time. I had an 02 with 4. 10 and i like the 3. 73 more and notice no difference in towing. This is also in the mountains of Colorado. My brother bought the same truck I have without asking about the gears and he gets +/-62mph out of 2000 rpm with a 4. 10. I get 70 mph out of the same rpm. However if you are looking at two trucks definitely go with manual trans if gas is you main concern. Also there is a post where a guy was talking about getting new gears from American Axle for around 1000 installed. Which would give him a 3. 55. maybe the truck that is better for you could use a gear job to make it perfect?
Thats my two cents

I got 22mpg on the first tank to NM... driving 60mph

I got 20mpg on the next couple tanks... driving 65mph

I got 17mpg driving 75mph for around 100 miles (getting ahead of storms) and the remainder of the tank (450 miles total) was 65mph, but that was bucking about a 30mph headwind across OK, TX, and NM...

These mileages are 4. 10s and a NV5600.

It is all about driving style: Drive like you stole it and mileage will suffer. Drive it KNOWING you can't run them hard/fast without mileage suffering, and they don't do too bad.

I'm not convinced the RPM difference between a 3. 73 and 4. 10 is enough to really affect mileage that significantly.

these are bolth 2007 autos and i plan on going with as tall a tire as i can run with no lift mods and with being practical for work.

I'm guessing you meant 285s, as in 285/70R17s. I'm running 33s, and gained 0. 5 MPG, hand calc'd of course, so I think you could easily run 34s or 35s and as long as it wasn't too wide a tire, you could gain up to 1 MPG off tires, to a point, but stick to 3. 73s.

Well, I gained 0. 5 MPG by a 3% increase in tire circumference, which amounts to a 100 RPM decrease in 6th (on a G56 trans), so I have evidence that it does, at least on my vehicle. A 200 RPM increase at 65 MPH going from 3. 73s to 4. 10 will most likely show a corresponding DECREASE in MPGs. I'm guessing it's somewhere near 6%. That would correspond to 1 MPG, at least, on MY truck. If I put the . 74 ratio 6th gear on, it corresponds to about 120 RPM decrease at 65 MPH, again, corresponding roughly to 3% decrease in tire circumference, and about 0. 5 MPGs. Of course, that's on a 2500 4x4 w/3. 73s and a G56 manual transmission that's already geared like a 4. 10 in 6th.

And are you anywhere near my 22mpg with my 4. 10s??

If you drive sensibly, 4. 10s WILL get the same mpg as 3. 73... just not at the same speed.

If you are looking to maximize mpg, mostly unloaded, and towing up to 10k, 3. 73's.

If you tow heavy and often mileage is probably low on your priority list, get the 4. 10's. :)

If you are going to tow heavy (over 12k) on the Interstate, and you can maintain 70mph+, 3. 73's, My truck wants to run 75/80mph with my 5vr. (I have 3. 73's) any slower and I am giving it more fuel and letting off constantly, at least in the hills.

If you are <70mph, I would do 4. 10's. Just my . 02s. It's all about the enviroment in which you drive:) .

what do you plan to tow?

I had an 04 with 4. 10s and now have an 06 with 3. 73s. . I would say mileage is similar when towing, but 1-3mpg impact when empty...

I tow a 9500lb TT about 2500 miles a year...

I really like how the truck with 3. 73s drive much better... .

My $. 02 worth,

Bryan

One, you're comparing apples to oranges. If I drive the same as you, theoretically, I should get comparable MPGs, since my 3. 73s are attached to a G56, which gives similar speed to RPMs.

Two, (brace yourself, and no offense intended, but:

"4. 10s WILL get the same MPG as 3. 73... just not at the same speed. "

Well NO S__T there, Mr. Obvious. How much SLOWER do you have to drive?

My truck driven sensibly, has never seen 20, unless you count CA Hwy 1 from SLO to Monterey, average speed 40 MPH. My recent best was 18. 3, hand-calculated. I am pretty sure I can get a mile or two more out of it, based on the increase from going from 31. 5" to 33" tires. 35" might do the trick, but that's a non-option for me, going to personal taste.

dems, first order, call names, from IN?

"steved" was asked, and gave good advice!

If you don't agree, so be it, you do not have to be so "democrat"ic".

Excuse Me, had a traditionalist moment!:)

Hey, hold on a minute, who you accusing of being a democrat? #@$%! :D

For the record, I'm not beholden to any political party.

As for steved (nothing personal), I was just pointing out "the obvious. " :-laf
