Has anyone swapped motors in a 06. My truck is an automatic bought an 06 motor with 6 speed. Got the motor in the truck fired it & it runs like sh-- Anyway the truck ends up at the dealer they do their thing, can't fix it because a motor from a stick won't work in a auto equipped truck. Get this- it's because they have different cranks #@$%! I just cant believe they would do this. But I did talk to cummins NW they confirmed that there are different part#s for the cranks. Anybody heard of this or found a way around it? I don't want to pull the motor again. Any Ideas? Thanks Randy

Nope they are telling me it a groove in the front of the crank Im guessing for the tone ring position at least thats all we have come up with just hoping somebody has a better anwser that I want to here. :)

when you changed engines did you get a new ecm? the engines are the same except for the programing. if you did not get a new ecm for an auto your truck will run like crap. plus if the engine was not new it probaly has a different vin number stored in the ecm, or none at all.

RobertP may be on to something just from previous threads. I would contact BOB4X4 he works for a delear.

RobertP is correct on the ecm I have the ecm for the new motor but its for a stick so we dont believe it will control the auto we put it in and it ran but not very long due to the anti theft, as to why Im swapping motors I thought Id get more power. Just kidding, well we believe I lost a couple of injectors as well as possibly a valve seat (havnt tore the old motor down yet) I thought it would be faster to just pick up a new motor complete I would have never dreamed DC was do something this Stuipid. As you can see from my sig I drive my truck more than most I was afraid of the computers when I bought this 06 right now Id like to have my old 12v back it had 389k on her when I sold her never put injectors in it. Just a headgasket at around 275k oh well back to the task at hand. Thanks for all the ideas so far hopefully we can figure this out and nobody else will have to go thru this. Randy

Count the notches on the tone wheel at front pulley. If they are different, swap it from the old engine.

second possibility: The original ECM went bad, not your injectors.

Third: is the new engine really NEW? Could it have some issues, bad sensors/injectors?

Ok tone wheels are the same according to dealer. WE actually thought the ECM went bad bought a used one thats why it ended up at the dealer because the ECM antitheft locked it up and it wouldnt start. The truck that the motor and trans came out of had 9k on it. It was a roll over dealer has verified the sensors. The reason I called Cummins NW was I couldnt believe DC would do something like that the guy at cummins said no they would not do that till he looked up the part# eviedently there is a different machining on the end of the crank we are guessing tone wheel position? Hoping somebody has figured this out before me if not it looks like I may be the one. Randy

The Manual crank will work fine in an Auto truck... .

A little backround:

When G56 came on board it had to have some special machined recess in the rear center of the crank for the sub-flywheel piece that attaches to the DMF.

The Auto crank does not have this machined recess.

So basically a manual crank will work for both types of engines but the auto crank is only for the auto's.

There is no tone ring or timing, or performance difference with the cranks.

ECM's however can be different not just in programming but in hardware so I would make sure your good to go on that front.

Justin is correct. that motor will work with either a auto or a manual. it really sounds like a ecm issue. what i would do is put the ecm off of the old motor on to the new one. that way it reads the correct vin and transmission.

Well Im with you on this guys but my original ECM has a check engine lite as soon as you turn the key it will run just like sh-- thats when we tried the 6spd ECM truck fired ran good briefly then died (antitheft?) so I bought a used one put it in fired rite up then died same as above so to the dealer it went now they checked everything ? disabled the antitheft will stay running just runs like sh-- like timings off I just dont have a good feeling about this. Justin when you say hardware what do you mean and how do I check it out. Thanks guys Randy

Have you talked with Rip at all to see if he has any ideas?

Didn't you just get a turbo from him a while back?

Yep that was me is was running so good too. I will give him a call tomorrow also he did see the truck when this first started it was at his shop but his computer would not read the 06 we thought it was injectors but werent sure so I took it to a shop that could Randy

That's what I thought. The reason is I was thinking about buying that turbo.

He told me about a guy with a ton of miles on a new truck needed a turbo because of a crack or something.

I think with a 6spd you would really like it there is a little lag with my auto I just throttle out of the hole normal as soon as she starts to whine throttle on if you hammer it your into second before you know it fishtailingOo. Damn thats fun I miss my truck. Randy

I bought what was supposed to be a 62/14. By mistake I somehow got a 66/14. Needless to say I hated it and went back to the stock turbo, mainly because I was getting ready for a long road trip towing my trailer.

Actually the harness's are different you can see that right away because of the trans plug. BUT THAT DOES NOT MATTER ANY MORE BOB AND MARCO ROCK... Oo... ... . Oo... ... Oo. the service writer about fell over when I drove my truck from behind the shop (they pushed it there)Can you say SMARTY... ... . Bob sent me a recovery program did a download and a away I went. I dont know how all this works but I can tell you one thing customer service from BOB WAGNER is second to none.
