The death of Cliff Robertson

I am in the market for a 45 auto. I am a ruger revolver nut but I am looking at trying to find an auto in 45 auto. I am a 45 long colt freak and have a 454 casull also but I have a Bisley blackhawk convertable in 45 auto and lc.

I am not to up on which brands are the best as far as acuracy and durability in the semi auto handguns.

Any input to get me started is all good.

I have had great luck with a number of Sig Sauer pistols. Currently carrry a . 40 cal which I love. Very comforatble, durable and smooth. I have put thousands of rounds thru them with no problems related to the weapon. A few due to the shooter though:rolleyes:

I would assume the . 45 they make is at least as good.

Just my . 40 cents worth...

Steve

There's really nothing "bad" about any of the name brands. Each have their followers that swear by them and trust their lives to them everyday. Basically you need to decide what configuration you want:
  • Single or double action
  • Single or double stack mag
  • Steel, alloy, or plastic frame
  • Is it for concealed carry or duty carry?

Decide what you want, go to a good gun store, and pick one out. You really can't go wrong.

Scott

H&K's, Sigs, and Springfields are my top three for the more tactical autos. The Kimbers I classify in a different group with the single stack 1911 style, but I absolutely love them. Go out and handle as many as you can. If you know friends with them try to shoot them. Everybody will have a slightly different opinion (just like trucks of course). Pick the one that fits your hands and budget. Are there any I don't like? Of course. Glock is #1 on that list. Yep shot them lots. Couple thousand rounds a year. Not because I wanted to, but because I had too. Good luck, have fun, keep shooting and let us know what you decide.

Shot a 454 Casull today. All I can say is the recoil is impressive. It was a Ruger as well.

Thomas

I looked at kimbers and they look alright, But way more than I want to spend at 1100-1200 new. I would like a gun in the $400-$600 range max. Used is ok in my book.

I would like satin stainless double action and want a larger framed gun longer barrel, not real important to conceal. would be a backup hunt gun on hip carry.

What are the differences in single and double stack clips? not up on this.

Single stack mags hold 7-8 rounds in a full size frame, double stacks hold 10-13. Single stack's have a smaller grip frame. Most double stacks are composite frames and have a much larger grip frame.

Scott

Single stack are just that. The magazines are narrower only allowing rounds to be stacked directly on top of the other. Limits capacity. Most in the single digits from 7 - 9rds. Double stack are a staggered arrangement in the magazine. This allows higher capacities especially for the smaller calibers like 9's and 40's. Capacities in the middle teens. Double stacked . 45's are still less rds than most full size 9's and 40's. My H&K full size . 45's have a capacity of 12. Of course the downfall here is I have pretty small hands that make acceptable control of double stacked . 45's much more difficult. Doable, but not real comfortable.

some of kimber's lower line is in the 600s, hard to go wrong with a glock for a carry piece, springfield's xd looks good, sig has a nice unit too, kinda depends on what you want to do with it on what to get, most indoor ranges have some rental guns that may give you a idea how some of the choices handle if you don't have friends with some toys to play with

i am odd in the fact that i like 1911 style pistols, single / DA revolvers and glocks, most of the guys i shoot with only sport one style but i own and have shot all on plates/bowling pins and cardboard silhouettes

Whick brands come in a double stack double action in a 45 auto? I don't care for the compact models either.

I like the Ruger p97 but it a smaller framed pistol.

Does any brand make a 45 long colt in an auto?

I am not familiar with a . 45 LC in semi auto. Not too many semis are chambered for rimmed cases, with . 22's being the major exception. . 357 Mags were chambered in Desert Eagles, but that is the only "big" round I can think of. With the rim comes the possibility of more misfeeds, or so I've heard.

On edit: I stand kind of corrected. Check this out. You can get it in . 454 Casull, then put a weaker recoil spring in and shoot . 45 LC. Company went out of business, but guns are still around, apparently. Airborne Combat Engineer: Mateba Model 6 Unica semi-auto revolver

I’ve been out of the market for a long time but let me see if I can remember. Please feel free to make corrections or additions.

Double action with double stack mags:

  • Glock (Really not double action, but…. . )
  • Springfield Armory (XD’s really not a double action, but…. . )
  • Ruger
  • Smith & Wesson
  • HK
  • Para-Ordnance
  • SIG Sauer
  • Taurus

As I said, please feel free to make corrections or additions.

I'm a big fan of the Para-Ordnance pistols... you can get them with the LDA trigger (light-pull double-action) plus an improved extractor. I love my Pro-Carry 6. 45 and 7. 45. They seem like they're machined out of a solid chunk of stainless steel. Would not want to get pistol-whipped by one!!!:-laf:-laf:-laf

Most durable? . 45?

I would have to say a polymer framed pistol will probably out last a steel framed variant.
However a drop forged steel framed 1911 (norinco) variant will probably give polymer a run for its money in the long run.

If I could have any . 45 for general use it would probably be the Springfield XD-45. For 9mm I would go with the Glock 19.

If you dig hard enough you'll find enough bad press on every handgun made to not trust anything built by any manufacturer. Just like trucks. :)

The Sig P220 is hard to beat. If it fits your hand it's a good choice. Arguably the best out-of-the-box . 45 built... ever.

The CZ97B is another great one. There are many clones of this style of pistol out there.

The two above are arguably the best non-1911 style . 45's on the market, and two of my three personal favorite . 45's.

CZ Handguns

My other favorite is the Beretta 8045 Cougar. The only . 45ACP handgun ever built by Beretta. No longer in production--Beretta "sold" the 8000 series lines to Stoeger for manufacture in Turkey, and Stoeger doesn't produce the 8045... .

Kind of unique in that they use a rotating barrel system--greatly reduces recoil. Ultra reliable, but hard to find and even harder to find aftermarket goodies for them... . awesome guns, though.

I have a Colt 45, Ruger 45, and a Para ordnance P10 45 which has now been renamed to the Warthog, here's a link Para:pistol Categories | P & LDA Series Handguns. Products include the Military style 1911 . 45 ACP, . 40 S&W, 9mm, pistols, handguns and firearms. Check out this new sneek Preview of our new Para Pistols. The NEW Para Companion Carry and Carry Option

It is the best firing most accurate 45 I have ever fired, if you can somehow get the opportunity to shoot one of these you wont be dissappointed.

Look at Taurus

This is a South American gun that is pretty much set up to target configuration. The NRA magazine gave it great reviews in the accuracy and value departments. I am not saying buy one, just look at many brands, take your time before you buy.
