I found a 3500 C&C Reg. Cab 84" cab to axle Cummins 6-speed manual with an 11' electric dump body already installed on a lot in Mass.

I saw this truck early last year and it is a Pre Jan. 01 2007 truck (the exhaust break is not installed or activated - no button on the dash board).

It is a ST with 20/40/20 split vinal bench seat

- A/C

- manual windows/lock

- snowplow prep

- ST decor

It is over a year old so I'm sure it will need all the computer updates.

I am concerned it also has that problem that the early 6-speed manual trannies had with fluid level.

What do you guys think would be a good offer price for something that is sitting in the WAY back lot, all but forgotten, covered with snow? I'm thinking an offer of 30K just to get it off their lot.

I would think I could get it for a steal, but I am concerned that there may be big problems with a truck that has sat for such a long time.

Are my concerns valid?

I have a friend with a truck almost exactly like the one you mentioned, and without the dump, it sounds like what I need for a new service truck. I am not sure, but I would assume if a truck is being sold as new for the first time, it would be required to have the latest computer flashes done, especially the emission related things.

Is there anyway to find out (or print out) the truck's "Window Sticker" from the internet if you know the VIN#?

I have the truck's VIN number, but the window sticker was missing on the truck. I want to be sure of all the options (or lack there of) in the truck before I consider making an offer.

I don't want to go to a sales person to ask cause then I'll get tied up and they'll try to put the "Arm" on me to buy right there and then.

There should be no software upgrades (re-flash) on the C&C 6. 7 and the exhaust brake is only a 3 or 4 hundred dollar option before standard X-brake production, which you should negotiate into the purchase. Play along that you want an 08 because of the re-flash issue, don't let them know you are aware they have the truck you want and then mention you want to install a dump body on the chassi. You need to be talking to fleet manager which should know his inventory and the fact that the truck needs to be sold.

If all goes the way you hope, do not let them cold start the engine, have it towed/pushed or whatever it takes to get it into the shop for warmup unless it has a block heater option and then return the next day for startup, due to the fact it has been sitting a long time in the snow.

The G56 should be fine but look into the production date for the gear ratio's, for there is a difference in the early models and will run at high RPM especially if it has 4:10 differential, unless you want to haul over the GCVWR.

Well, I stopped by today to see if I could find a window sticker on it to see exactly what it has. I want to make sure exactly what is installed on the truck and what options (or lack there of) were installed before I would consider making an offer. I had to go into the dealership and ask the fleet salesman for a copy of the sticker (there was nothing on or in the truck).

After waiting 20 minutes for them to print something out that should have taken them 1 minute to do, he hands me the "Options Report" and then a quote for the truck (which I did not ask for). It was a little over $39K.

The ask what I was expecting to pay, and I just took the Options report and told them I'll let them know and thanked them for the info and then I was gone.

Man that dealership was full of people right out of Glen Gary Glen Ross movie. I felt like I needed a shower after visiting them.

The truck needs (1) Exhaust break activated and button in cab, (2) activate speed control, (3) weld a plate on rear end to frame ends for a trailer receiver and "D" rings.

Then I think I'll say $32K max (maybe a little more). They can take the loss.

39K is too high for the market, I paid 42K for mine and I ordered it as a SLT with Nav, U-connect, sat, Heavy duty every thing and most importantly tow prep. If the truck your looking at does not have a receiver hitch then it doesn't have the tow prep. That also means it needs a seven pin connecter and harness and relays. You will have to spend a couple of thousand on those items alone (or a lot of labor) if you let them have there way.

I think you would be better off ordering yours and pay a little more than you expected but at least its what you needed. Give Adam a call in washington St and take a, more than likely needed vacation, for the money you will save on your purchase. I bet he could beat that price by a couple of thousand and get more options.

If your worried about the C&C w/o bed take a look at the pics below. I made temporary fenders relatively cheap and drove it across 5 States and no one bothered me. By the way the money I saved on the truck, payed for the trip to get my bed. I plan on taking pics of the bed when I get my digital camera charger from HP. I cannot charge my new camera because I over heated the charger near an OTR truck sleeper heater

FATCAT, if it were me and I really wanted that stripper truck, I'd tell them $25k. regular cab, no power anything, probably why they have it sitting out back.

Why's that? IMO they are going to do more wear/tear on the truck towing it, or pushing it (hello, it's the dealer) than just crankin' 'er up in the cold.

The truck on the lot already has an 11' dump body with tarp and electric hoist installed. The truck does have the trailer tow prep as well as the HD snowplow prep. I saw the 7 pin connector and cable tucked behind the steel plate attached to the dump body sub frame under the tailgate.

One thing I like about the truck is that it has no electric windows locks or fancy electronic key.

The only things that need to be done to set up the truck right is software for the exhaust break + cab switch, speed control software activated, and a spare tire/wheel.

The other issue I have is, will a 3500 C&C with dump body be able to carry 2 yrds. of stone/dirt/sand without compromising the fram? Would that be too much weight to carry?

Sorry, I forgot about the extra cost of the bed? As far as the weight of the truck the dealer should of had it weighed for DMV registration or ask them to weigh it before purchase. In California, I had to weigh mine after bed installation before I could register it. Take that weight and subtract it from the GVWR and you will have an answer.

MCummings: IMO at below freezing for a long period is bad to cold start it, and what wear & tear from pushing it into the shop? If I lived in that climate I would have a Block heater pluged in, when not in use. In fact I'm sure it was ordered with one for that climate zone when the truck was ordered

Thats my worry. A 4X4 Reg. cab 84" body is about 7K lbs + 2K lbs for body/hydrolics. At 12,500 GVW that leaves a 3,500 lbs. payload! That's nothing for an 11' dump body. A little over a yard of dirt or stone or sand. Fin for wood or mulch.

Sounds like a 4500 would be better.

I better start playing the lottery and scratch tickets.

I think that's being a little picky. I don't think these trucks were plugged in on the transport, or when it was moved to the holding lot... Why so picky now?

Anyway, wear and tear... ?

Every time, (I'm not joking, everytime) my truck has been pushed or pulled it has had damage done to it, either the lower fairing on teh front bent, or the bumper scratched, or the rear tow plug tore off, or a more wore out than usual center console from a "tech" trying to hard to turn the wheel while getting pushed. I think a minute amount of wear on the 500k motor will easily offset the wear from the "techs" trying to tow the truck in from a golf cart, or forklift, or whatever they can get their hands on in the shop.

IMHO

Not picky, just cautious, and if I'm going to buy it, I want it as if it just came off of the assembly line. A good example of what I'm worried about, someone racing the truck on a test drive or not waiting for the grid heater to properly warm before cranking the engine under normal conditions. There are many other examples but I don't have the time and don't want to steal this thread from FATCAT. There is a reason for a Block heater and it is in sub-zero temps to prevent just what I'm worried about. I'm sorry if I seem anal, but that is why my vehicles are in as good as condition as can be expected for a heavy duty truck that I do use in a heavy duty application.

Steve...

Very well said. That's good for you, I won't argue with that, you'd be a great candidate to buy your used truck from.

True, lets not continue the theivery of FATs thread.

That is correct about the receiver hitch not being there even though you have the tow prep. I forgot mine did not have it because there is no bed, until the bed was installed and connected to the 7 pin harness but was there with the wire harness.

It was weird that this truck did not have the final back plat on end of the frame with the receive hitch and break away chain "D" rings. Everything is there on the truck, dump body, hoist, mudflaps and some type of bolted on or welded on vertical end frame with ribs ... just not the final plate like you see on the end of a mini-dump truck.

That would definitly have to be installed before a sale can be made.

If I were in the market for such a truck I would call Dave Smith in Kellogg, Idaho without hesitation and order it new. It may cost you a little more, but that way you get exactly what you want.

Well, exactly what I want and affording exactly what I want are two different things. Yes I checked out Dave Smith's inventory and he has a bunch of 3500's in stock that I would like (minus a dump body). Then there is the shipping cost to NH and the $$$ I would have to pay a dealer here to do the deal.

It all depends on what this dealer in Mass will take for the old left over (like a $32,000 offer for the 4X4 truck with the 11' dump body). I they won't budge, I can order a new 2008 ST Long wheel base 4x4 and have a dump installed for under $40K.

Just fly one way to Spokane, Washington and drive the truck home. Dave Smith has a shuttle that will pick you up at the Spokane airport.

That sounds like fun, and I could use a vacation (I'd love to see the west ... thinking of moving to Wyoming some time), but one thing ... I wasn't born with feathers on my arms. I am one of those people who does not step in those winged infirnal contraptions. Last time I was on a plane was in '72 when I was 7 years old and had no choice. I'll never do that again.
