Electric or PTO driven Hoist for dump body?

Well, I guess since I can't take the money with me in the pine box ... I am going for a 4500 4X4 84" cab-axle and an 11' Galion 100U dump body.



Next "opinion pole" here on this forum is: should I go with a PTO driven scissor hoist or an electric driven?



I am leaning towards a PTO driven with the PTO prep on the G56.



Pros / Cons?



What say yee.

I have seen both and they seem to work well. IMO the pto unit w/pump will probably last longer and be less trouble as it ages.

I just spoke with an upfitter about the PTO option.



WOW! it was almost $2500 EXTRA in parts plus 9 hrs in additional labor over the Electric over Hydrolic option!



I think the Electric over Hydrolic is the way to go for now ... unless I have a 20+ yrd dump.

I think an electric system works great on ton trucks. I've got one and the only problem I've had in 7 or 8 years has been a bad solenoid, easy to fix. Its also nice to just push a button and dump, makes it easier to spread b/c you've got quick up and down changes. I don't use the dump much, but I have used it pretty heavy on occasion. I've dumped 6 tons pretty many times with no problems.

I had a Galion electic hoist under a flatbed on an F-350. We chose it because we had employees and did not trust them with proper PTO operation. The electric hoist was reliable enough, but very slow. If it was for my own use I would go PTO driven.

Well, the new 4500 is on order. So it will be about 8 - 12 weeks, and I have some time to get prices (ball park since things can change quicly within a month). One upfitter who does a lot of business told me that unless I am lifting some VERY heavy stuff (in the 10+ yards amount) an electric system works just fine and is considerably cheaper.



I know I have had some overly heavy stuff in my dump trailer (3yrds of stone dust) and as long as the marine battery was charged up, the piston would lift the bed just fine.



We'll see what I can get for prices.

go with the chelsea pto and direct mount hydraulic pump. . thats what I am doing you can add other circuits later ie if you want to run a winch or what ever. . plus with teh pto you can power up and power down. . most electrics are gravity drop... ie they move around when dropped and unloaded... my omaha hoist is 3400 psi up and 1500 down. . The pto is for a G56 mounted as if it was in a third gen, ie pump facing forward. . its still not installed as I have to install my G56 first. . ha. . it was expensive. . but WAY beefier,,and it will last & work better. . what trans is your truck gonna be?. . any reason way you ordered a4500 and not a 5500?. . a local contractor here has a 5500 reg cab 4x4 auto. . its runs a big plow over 9 foot and heavy sander . . hes been ave. over 13mpg . . his f550 was going 8mpg. . he loves it!, the ford overheated often too. .

My new truck will be set up to install a PTO, its just the additional expense that is the factor. Originally I didn't think there would be any difference between the electric over hydrolic and the straight PTO system.

I will be getting the G56 Manual transmission (I hate automatics), plus I save $2,200.

I would like the 5500, but for another $2500 in cost and another $150 a year to insure and that amount again or more to register was just too much to take. I'm getting a stripper truck as it is. The 4500 will haul as much payload and then some as I plan to load in the truck plus it has the same towing capacity as the 5500 so really no big deal. If money was not an issue I would be looking at T300 or 335 from the Paccar team (wouldn't we all).



I'll be getting quotes from a few upfitters in the next couple of weeks, so we will see which way I go PTO wise.



I'm really in no hurry to get the truck. The longer I wait the more $$$$ down I can put and the lower the financed amout will be.



One thing that stinks is that the financing is in teh commercial class which is about 1+ points heigher than the rates they are giving on the 3500 chassis cabs. I am hopeing that the Fed will cut rates again on Thursday the 31 at their next meeting and the short term rates will once again drop.

well if you need infor on the pto. . ihave it as i speced mine as if it was in a 3rd gen... etc... . I still have the receipts. . so precious ha... . I can take some pics of the components for you if you like. . the hoist psi will determine th ehydraulic pump size and the tank you will need . . the omaha hoists run high pressure so my pump is bigger and more $. . the Chelsea people said most hoists are much lower psi... . it wouldn't be too hard to install yourself and then you'd save the labor. . plus it would be installed to your specs / care etc... the ptos come shipped at the correct internal clearances. . you just need to fit the angle adapter to the pto with the correct thickness gasket. . not to hard. .

any how I'll take some pics of my friends 5500 dump and some of my pto setup. . for ya. . it'll be a few days. .

as for a better ride. . the older FL106 Freightliners with the series 50 4cyl version of the series 60 is really nice for a small hauler. . its a real engine brake, big power 320hp stock. . real trans, big rear, easy to work on air brakes. . and still able to find them used & cheap ie $15 - $20k a lot cheaper the an 4500 is . . thats what I would do if you had a cdl. . save a butt load of dough... and have a heck of a truck a local landscaper uses one with 24. 5 tall rubber. . and its a awesome rig. . 10 foot dump. . he's never over weight, its easy to manuever, etc etc. . around here the Dot bother the f550 and 1 ton crowd much more then the slightly larger trucks. . mainly due to weight and licenses. . etc

Thanks for the info. That PTO setup is quite stout.

I'm located in Northwood NH ... Tax FREE NH where there is no sales or income tax. That makes it nice when buying stuff.

For me, a 4500 truck is plenty of truck for what I need, plus I need 4X4 for winter and "Mud" season



I just got a very good quote today for a well respected upfitter for a Air-Flow body and hoist setup http://www.air-flo.com/dl/Pro-Class.pdf ... conserably less than what the dealer quoted when using their upfitter (approx 7,500 for EVERYTHING including pintal hitch and manual tarp). But this is with the

electric over hydro hoist. This upfitter installs alot of these units on the State DPW and highway trucks.



I would like to see some pictures definitely of yours and your buddy's setups.



I hope this thread helps other people concerdering buying a C&C and how to upfit them. Hope it give them some good ideas.
