I am putting in new injectors and the first impression is a vision of cobwebs. What i the easiest way to take off the lines? Do you take them in two groups of three lines or do you take them off individually? How do you get them off the pump when they are behind the other nuts. I just did kind of a first glance diagnosis this evening. I will dig into it tomorrow. Just looking to save a little time by asking for experience. Thanks.
 
Unless you're replacing the lines... I'd leave them on the pump. Pull off all the clamps that hold them down and you should have enough play to get the new injectors in without the lines getting in your way. Just be careful with them, kink one and its all over for that one. I just knew I didnt wanna play the guessing game of which one went where.
 
Tippin's right. Pull the bolts holding the clamps to the head. If you can, loosen the lines on the pump. This should give you enough room to get them out and in. If you have to remove lines, pull them in 2 sets of 3. Remove bolts to head, loosen pump end. Wiggle them out. You have to move 1 set back, and pull the other 1st. I can reach in between lines to loosen them all. Sometimes use 1 wrench on the end of another at an angle thru the lines.
 
Thanks guys, I'm going to tear into this today after I plow the snow that fell last night. It's good news that I don't really need to pull the lines. My hands aren't the right size to be getting down in there to take them off the back side of the pump. I can't wait to try the new injectors. Now, I've got to figure out how to get the old turbo exhaust housing off. I'ts sitting in Kroil now, maybe its done its work overnight. Thanks again.
 
For the turbo, get a 10" extension for your 1/2" drive socket, you should be able to get at most the bolts that way. I needed to remove one of the bolts that holds the housing to the center shaft part of the turbo, because it was in the way of the extension. You may want to hammer the socket on too, just so you don't round anything off. A gear drive box end wrench helps in a couple of places here too. The first time I did it, I pulled the whole manifold and took it in the basement where its warm. When I pulled the new turbo off to drill and tap the manifold for a pyro, I did it with the manifold on the truck. Its frustrating, but possible.

I can tell you what I do...



I remove the valve cover or covers so I can push the line aside. Yes, I take off the head clamps and the line to line clamp(s). I don't like how I'd have to bend the line to clear the injector with the valve cover(s) on and I also don't care to work with the lines right there in my road when I have to pull the injector and clean out the bore etc.



If you ever have to remove all the lines, I have a play-by-play direction guide. As some one stated... ... ..... you'd have to know the proper order cuz they intertwine and are stacked!
 
I just finished a pump install today and pulled the lines. It's not too bad if you have a 17mm crows foot, a 3" and a 6" extension and a little patience. I agree though, you should get enough play in the lines by unbolting the hold down clamps on the intake manifold and you could loosen the clamps holding the lines together if you need a little more. I wouldn't want to bend those line much or too often though, I think they only have about 8000 psi on them. If you do pull them off, take the front three, then the back three. In fact, you should be able to rotate the back three around a little and not have to worry about fishing them through the wires. If you pull the hold down clamps on the intake, the manual says put a little RTV on the bolts to prevent air leaks. I doubt it would be much of a leak though.
 
Just my 2 cents. When removing the lines (if you chose to) I remove all the clamps then crack loose all that i can reach at the pump and injectors. Then remove 1-6 one at a time and label them. On reassembly I go 6-1 one at a time leaving things loose. When all is fit, lightly snug everything and put clamps back on. Then tighten. I also use Crows foot flair nut tools.
 
Uhgg! Too much work! When the customer is paying $1. 50 a minute, you gotta find all the shortcuts you can. ;)
 
Thats the thing though. I dont pay anyone to work on my trucks nor charge when I help others, as it is for my relaxation and personal satisfaction. But I see your point on saving time for the benifit of a "paying" costomer. I usually take 5 time too long for any given project, but that only cuz that is how I make it enjoyable. If and when I try to make good time on stuff like that I get impatient and bend or bloody something.
 
Rebel, I agree! When I work on my truck it's nice to take it easy, stop for coffee, beer, BS, or what ever. I still like to do the minimum of work though. Why pull 6 pieces when I can pull 3?

When I get in a hurry things always go wrong too. At work I just try to be steady, to keep it smooth.

I gotta go relax and work on a cab swap. ;) :D
 
Either of you cab swappers have a set of tow mirrors either the low mount with bracket style or the west coast style. . ? I'm looking for a set

Sorry Deo. Donor had no mirrors and my originals were the little car ones. They got lost when I painted it the 1st time. ;):-laf
 
Thanks for all the help, I got the 30 hp injectors in yesterday afternoon without taking the lines off. I only had to tweak the lines a little to the side with the valve covers off. That was by far the best way. She fired right up after a quick bleeding. I also changed to a 16 cm turbo housing and took it for a quick ride to test it a little. It had just started to snow so I couldn't do much but drove up one hill nearby, no boost. Freakin, I took it back to the barn and found I forgot to tighten the clamp on the compressor side of the housing. What was that noise anyway? Now I have to wait till the snowplows clear and sand before I can test again. I'm gonna start another post to pick your brains about tweaking the pump. Thanks.
 
You'll love what tweaking your pump will do for you. Find me another vehicle you can get as much of a power increase without spending a cent, and barely taking anything apart? It's like a hottie that gets right down to buisness without having to buy her dinner...

My cigar lighter is missing and so is the dome lite behind my head over the sliding rear window. Also, was there some type of logo on the glovebox door?
