Used motor oil ?

Metal storage tank

just say a little birdie told me that the largest Battery Company in China... has apparently made a new advancement that they will have in a new vehicle by 2010... that supposidly does this... .

1. It has a 1 liter diesel engine that runs a generator that will charge the batteries automatically - it ONLY is hooked to the generator - IT WILL NOT DRIVE THE CAR.

2. The batteries can be completely CHARGED in 10 minutes... .

3. Range - I didn't get that part - BUT I understand it is substantial...

4. For American conditions - whatever those are - in one month's use the diesel will use about 1 Gallon of FUEL!

Now we'll see if this is correct... . but the source I know is very reliable - and does many many billions - yes that's with the big B - of dollars of business in China with his OWN COMPANIES - Which are Private - that I believe him..... anyway - THIS is exactly what makes me so mad!!!!

WHY doesn't this administration - declare war on OIL and go after batteries BIG TIME! Oh I think I know the answer... . but honestly tell me why we won't take our technology and put it to use for all of us NOW! I want to eliminate the internal combustion engine from the equation - let OPEC go take a flying - well you know what!!!

Oh and by the way - here's a Chinese Electric car that was imported in the US in 2005 - NOTE that it can get up to 155 miles on the road..... and 93 in town. .

Energy calculations just don't support such a implied performance claim.

Regardless of battery technology advancement, it's still the storage device.

Diesel engine and generator are the energy converters and just aren't going to do much of any work on one gallon of fuel per month.

I FORGOT this is a PLUG IN CAR

you plug it in at night... ... ... ..... the batteries have such range that it is unusual to need the extra diesel.....

Did you guys read the comments on there. This is one of the reasons why "green cars" have only recently come on, the people who have been pushing them are a bunch of leftist hippies. "The government should give the cars away. " blah, blah, blah.

I love the environment. It's the environmentalists that I can't stand.

That may be true - BUT call a spade a spade - they were WAY AHEAD of their TIME!!!!

And trust me if it weren't for the Whacko ENVIRONMENTALISTS" where I grew up in North Central Pa - Streams would still be RED from ACID MIne waste! Afterall the cheapest way to deal with the waste was DO NOTHING!!!!! And Greedy Corporations still want Others to pay for their Superfund Sites... . they don't want to pay for anything themselves - they want US - through the Government to pay for their mess... .

And I remember what Pittsburgh's air quality use to be - but thanks to those NASTY Environmentalists - they brought cleaner air THROUGH mandates! If you think they would do it by themselves as that Idiot Hush Limbaugh says - You Are Flat Out Crazy!!!

Now that said..... current air quality issues seem to be a mess. There should be fewer standards... . we don't need 50 or so blends of gasoline... ...

The "whacko" environmentalists "in my opinion" cause more trouble then they have saved. I agree, we DO NOT need 50 blends of fuel but who mandated these 50 blends to begin with? How much have they cost us in energy costs in the last 30 years? Keep an eye on the democratic bill comming to the floor in june, you think the wallstreet traders have ballooned the market, wait til you see what this bill will do to fuel prices.

You're preaching to the choir as far as historical pollution control and general activism. My point, it these people are too often so far to the radical left as to be beyond the pale.

On a different note, I'll give you an example of their overreaching. Ever read "Silent Spring" by Rachael Carson. She talks about bird egg shells being too weak because of DDT, she claims. DDT is a fat soluble molecule, so it's supposed to be in the food chain for a LONG, LONG time. But, GUESS WHAT? When they outlawed DDT, what happened? In a relatively short period of time, the bird egg shells got hard again. On the surface, that sounds like it worked, but guess what? How do you explain the rapidity of the recovery of egg shell hardness IF THE DDT is STILL prevalent in the food chain???!!! It's the same ppl that feed us this line of bunk about human-induced global warming. If the Earth is being heated up by human industry to the tune of say . 6 degrees C, then how do you explain that in the same period Mars, which is further from the Sun, heats up . 65 deg C? NASA has reported climactic changges on pretty much every planet plus Pluto (which recently was downgraded from planet status).

When an electric vehicle can tow 25K at 65 mph for 500 miles, I'll buy one. Until then we'll need diesel, screw the Arabs drill at home.

My guess on the bird eggs would be

Typically in general the higher up the food chain you are the longer you live. Most birds do not live all that long. It is not like they live 50 years or anything like that (yes some do but in general they do not). The things that birds eat live again in general a very short period of time. In general insects live from a few hours to a couple days to a few weeks to a few months and a relatively few longer. So as birds quit ingesting DDT from their food source there was probably an immediate benefit to them through lower levels in their system. Now DDT may very well have lived on longer in the food chain as whatever critters eat the birds dead or alive that live longer than birds continued to have DDT in their system but they arent birds and most dont lay eggs nor were they the focus of the book. So it is quite possible that the birds did benefit fairly quickly from nonuse of DDT and that DDT did stay in the food chain longer just not the birds food chain. The higher up the chain the longer it would be present.

Barry, That all fits together as reasonable.

As a little guy I back on the farm I can remember helping Pop fab up home-made PTO driven sprayer for the tractor and the cornfield results were tremendous using DDT.

Not many years later Eagle populations were crashing.

WOW... A bunch of dieselheads in a discussion of DDT and it's effects on wild bird populations and thinning eggshells. Who woulda thunked it?? Excellent explaination by the way Barry.

I can remember as a kid running behind the "mosquito" truck as it drove down the road fogging the community. The adds said it was safe and of course we believed them. Luckily I'm perfectly normal now (Right!).

Major breakthrough in batteries..... yeah, right. People in the EV community have been waiting for that "major breakthrough" in battery technology for over 50 years now. Wish I had a dollar for every one of these "breakthrough" stories I've seen in the last 40 years.

Same thing with fuel cells - 40 years ago they said "in 20 years we'll have a workable fuel cell cheap enough to put in your car". And 40 years later, that's still the same story they're pushing. That is, except for the people who actually engineer, design, and build fuel cells - according to them, fuel cells will NEVER be cheap enough to put in POV's.

That is, unless there's a "major breakthrough".

Another reason the air quality has significantly improved in Pittsburgh - most of the steel mills have shut down and production has moved to China. Couldn't compete with slave labor and zero environmental standards. DOD can't even find a steel mill in the US now that can make armor-quality steel to repair their vehicles damaged in Iraq - the ones that are still operating are owned by China, and the Chinese told them to basically go pi$$ up a rope. #@$%!

yeah no steel in Allegheny county (pittsburgh) for over 10 years. the air is clear, but there are not many jobs. I understand the unions made it hard to stay competitive. Some outlying counties still produce steel, but the labor often work for under $20 an hour

The auto makers killed the electric car.

Who wants to build only one car per citezen? No one.

An Electric motor will out last several gasoline motors, maybe even some diesel motors.

Building electric cars will put them out of business in a decade.

Building e-cars promotes battery technology, and they don't want it to happen.

Thus when forced to produce e-cars they go to hybrids, which have that gas motor to cause this car to be replaced.

There is no single answer to the crisis we are in.

Quite a few people-maybe on in every family can benefit by e-cars.

Others need deisels for towing as an example.

Some would benefit with 100% ethanol. ( by building engine that are designed to run on it,-high compression)

It's a propaganda article.

Battery technology, not conspiracy, holds back electric car production.

Want to be Bill Gates rich, 10 times over?

Invent a battery that stores energy equal to tank of liquid fuel.

The car battery performance in those test vehicles was horrible when you look at full cycle lifetime battery performance spec sheet.

In 1957 there was a Chevy guy that modified his carberator and it got 60 mpg and he sold it to some big oil company and they locked it away... ,

There's so much market demand/reward for next generation battery development that no single industry (oil) can hold back what scientists worldwide have been working on for many years.

It's just a tough nut to crack but someday someone will.

It'll be a Ben Franklin, Nikola Tesla moment in history.
