Here I am

air noise at heavy load

Why'd they change the valve clearance specs?

I have a 2005 with 56k miles. Under load I have a loud air sound under the glove box. After reading some posts I removed air charger hoses inspected, The hoses were fine. I still have the problem. Could it be the Waste Gate??

Thanks

Is this a new noise or one that you have been noticing for a while? Have you made any changes recently... . air filter type, intake system, etc?

There is no way its coming for the air box. It sounds like it is in the glove box. It started when I was towing in the mountains. Power is fine. Truck does not overheat. It is coming from the turbo. It is a release of air pressure. I inspected the hoses and they were fine. I was wondering about the waste gate and if it does something to regulate boost by dumping.

Wastegate doesn't dump air into the environment. Are you hearing this at shifts or when you let off the trottle? (bark) Fill out your signature so we know what you have. Manual, Auto etc.

When you get to ~32psi of boost it does open, but only with a heavy load. . and you shouldn't be able to hear it.

Do you have a pyro? That is where you would see the increase in temp from an air leak.

I only hear the noise under heavy acceleration. The air sound goes away when I let off. So if the wastegate does not dump on the compresser side. It must be one of the hoses. The intercooler is to far away from the firewall to make the air noise I am hearing.

The wastegate just routes exhaust gases around the turbine wheel to regulate the speed of the turbine wheel. Hence, regulating boost. The stock wastegate pressure is around 30 psi. At 1400 degrees, the computer senses a high EGT condition and will electronically close the waste gate to introduce more air into the engine. Boost pressures will then hit close to 40 psi. You can hear the exhaust note change if you have a straight pipe. Are you sure that the compressor wheel is not making contact with the housing. That would cause an air leaking sound. If you intercooler was blown then you would be smoking heavy. If the compressor wheel was slightly touching the housing, you would still build boost but you would have a different noise.

The info in bold is the only accurate info. There is no EGT sensor on any 5. 9, the computer will not close the WG at high EGT's. . high EGT's is how Dodge meets the EPA standards w/out an EGR. .

If your seeing more than ~32psi of boost on a stock setup something isn't working properly. I have only seen 37psi of boost with stock fueling and the WG disabled, and that was towing up a steep hill at WOT in 4th.

The sound is loud under load. I have the normal turbo noise upto half throttle (high pitch whine). High rate of acceleration or towing the air noise will over power the radio. It is like an air gun to a air hose or an extremly LOUD AC duct actuator noise(cars with vacume duct actuators) under the glove box. I cannot make it happen power braking.

I'm interested in this thread because I have always felt that this 06 I currently have (bought it used) seems louder in cab that my 04. 5. It sounds kind of like someone opened a vent door under the glove box.

On older gen trucks, there was a rubber flap somewhere under the fan that I understood to be getting sucked in (or up)at "higher" rpms. Others have mentioned the air filter getting sucked up in to the top of the air box)??

Is that right? Hmmm. That's funny. Explain this then, "expert". Why when I'm towing with a friend of mine's 05, with all stock components with a set of gauges, does the exhaust temp climb until 1400 and then the boost go from 30 to 42 psi and the egts stay the same. What do you think the electrical actuator does on the turbo? Why would the turbo have a diaphram and an electronic actuator. Huh? High egts is not how Cummins meets emissions. The way they meet emissions is to draw out the combustion process so it doesn't flash. A quick flash creates excess NOx. If you draw out the burn you cut down on the NOx. They do this by retarding the timing and having pilot and post injections.

Well Jwalsh1 and RankRam won!!! The intercooler blew. The clamps that hold the plastic tanks let lose. The "NEW" mopar cooler looks so much better that the old plastic junk. I hope that engineer was laid off.
