Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Part # list for various year PCM's?

Seems Like some time back, there was a pointer on here to a website that provided Dodge/Cummins part # listings for various year PCM's and ECM'S. I have obtained a used PCM off Ebay that was represented as out of a '01 manual transmission truck, I plan to simply set it aside as a spare for the OEM one that is working perfectly on my truck. I just don't want to do that, only to find that if/when I need it, it is actually off a truck older and incompatible with my own - I do realize that for it - or ANY replacement PCM - to function properly, it will need to be reflashed with the proper VIN and truck mileage off my truck - but otherwise, SHOULD at least keep the truck moving until that is done. The #'s off the spare are:

a large # 356AC



Module S/N TEM0758PKY11 00000



Anyone here help with verification that this IS off a '01 manual transmission truck - or a pointer to where PCM part # listings can be found?

This is the big downside to our "technology age" - we can decently swap transmissions, and a wide variety of mechanical engine/drivetrain parts, and have good documentation as to various components - but when it comes to the mysterious electronics boxes, extremely few of us have a clue as to which goes to what - or what will or will not interchange - and a failed 2 cent Taiwan resistor can leave you stranded on a dark and lonely stretch of road just as fast as a busted transmission...

You might try calling Auto Computer Exchange. They sell refurbished ecms, pcms etc. I have bought an ecm from them and gave me good service. They may be able/willing to tell you.

The cross reference you're looking for can be found below. It's a .pdf document 338 pages long.



Daimler Chrysler J2534 Flash File Availability



The part number on the PCM you bought seems to indicate the software it contains is correct for a 1998 model year Regular or Quad Cab Federal 5. 9L CTD with a 5 speed manual transmission.



Ideally, you'd want to flash it with the latest software appropriate for your truck, which would then change the part number to match the new software. At a minimum you'd at least want to update the mileage stored within the PCM, or possibly trouble codes could result. I don't think having a mileage mismatch would cause any problems with functioning.



What's strange is Chrysler's document (above) doesn't seem to have an entry for a PCM flash file for a diesel truck for the 2002 model year. They skip right over from 2001 to 2003! This could just be an oversight I suppose.



I'll try to remember to launch my Chrysler flash file software tonight to see if I can find a PCM flash file listed for your particular model year and configuration.

Thanks John - that's the pointer I remember from earlier - and had the same problem then with the '02 info. Still unsure, IF the PCM I have is actually originally from a '98 model, can it be reflashed up to an '02... Guy I got it from claimed it to be off an '01 he was parting out - I really don't doubt him, just don't know how interchangeable this stuff really is...

The seller might have had that PCM on a 2001... could've been one he picked up from a junkyard to replace the original.



I loaded up the Chrysler ECM/PCM flashing software and there are no PCM flash files for the 2002 model year in there either!



The best I can tell, Chrysler doesn't sell a generic PCM that you flash with software to a particular year truck like they do with the Cummins ECM's. Based on this fact and the fact that they apparently didn't ever release a PCM flash file for the 2002 model year leads me to conclude that maybe they only ever released PCM flash files when they needed to upgrade the software in an original PCM. But based on the number of PCM flash files released for other model years, I find it hard to believe they never released a single update for a 2002 model year CTD truck! Or maybe the PCM for that model year *can't* be flash updated for some reason?



Anyway, I looked up the correct PCM part number for your truck in the Dodge parts manual and then checked it against an online Dodge dealer part system. The correct PCM part numbers is shown to be: 56040220AC



Since you already have the 1998 PCM on hand, I guess it couldn't hurt to temporarily try it out in your truck to see if it might work as an emergency spare. It's not going to make your truck blow up. If you had an automatic transmission I might be a bit more concerned, but not with your manual transmission. If it doesn't work right, I think I'd break down and call Auto Computer Exchange. I'm sure they've forgotten more about these PCM's than we'll ever know. Worst case you might see if Auto Computer Exchange would let you use the 1998 PCM you have as a core toward the purchase of one of their remans even though you want a 2002 model year PCM.

John, as it turns out, and after looking up the related info provided in your pointer, I rechecked the number on the PCM I have against what the seller stated it was - and found he sent me the WRONG PCM - it IS off a '98 truck, he still has the right one, and is sending it to me - the # on that one is Chrysler P/N P56028500AB - I couldn't find that one in the list pointer, but the digit string seems consistent with other '01 units...

Good catch!



That one shows up the Dodge parts manual as being for an early 2001 model year (built prior to 6-26-2000) with a manual transmission. It's definitely worth trying out in your truck once you have it.
