Tire questions

Can't beat that. So far the Michelins are worth the extra money I paid for them over any other brand tire. They still look brand new with 15K+ on them. Hoping to see how they do on snow here shortly. Scotty

might try them

I have been using Firestone Transforce A/T's for the last couple of sets, they have been a decent tire for me except for traction about anywhere dirt is involved, they just don't seem to dig in hardly at all. If I run them until they are practically bald I can get around 40,000 out of them but 35,000 is more realistic.

I've always heard good things about Michelins, especially about tread life, but I've never been able to convince myself to spend the extra money on them. I checked at our local Sam's ( even though I won't buy them there) and they were exactly $30 more than the Firestones. So if the Michelins would last 6,000-7,000 miles longer and be a better tire traction wise, they would be worth the extra cost.

Just replaced my worn pair of BFG AT KO with the ltx AT2's and was initially pleased when the tire guys remarked they didn't have to plaster weights to balance them. Was even more pleased in this "blizzard" (please!!) that hit southern NE. driving a 14" snowbound road I found the truck had more grip and zip and… since I was in 4WD (all four talkin' to each other) was surprised to find the remaining BFG's choked with snow at the end BUT the Michelins were virtually clean. The void in the michelins do seem to be designed to bite into snow but not try to swallow it!!

very nice tires, tried to buy a set this summer but they don't make it in 285/17... . bought my 2nd choice duragrapplers instead... .

Well Gentlemen, I thought I new what I wanted till now. My 04 truck still has the original mich LTX's on them and the truck only has 21k on it. . My tires are wearing down, but I figured I could press out just one more winter, unfortunately one of my front tires sidewall gave way this weekend and now I'm pressed to make a discission. If I replace just the blown tire for now and replace all four in the summer with the at2's, will the single new tire with new tread cause any trouble with my truck I am not aware of. This may seem like a silly question, but I truly am concerned about that. The four AT2's are $239 each plus bal, etc, so Being xmas just wiped me out, I am forced to wait a bit longer. . Thanks Everyone. .

Worth every penny per mile

They are worth every penny, I have over 52K on these tires with 50% in town and 50% highway. Been off road maybe twice. Rotated about every 8K.

Kind of on the same subject...

I think I've read over every thread about tires the past two days. It seems that the general consensus is Michelins are the best all-round.

What I'm considering are XPS Ribs for the fronts and either XPS Traction or LTX A/T2 for the rears. OR, just LTX M/S all-round. I like what I read about the Ribs for steering, but for rotations the 6 matching tires is hard to argue against.

Also If I upgraded to 235s, I noticed Michelin has X-Radial LT2 or XC LT4 and claim they are much better for wet roads. Living in south Louisiana, this is pretty much a must.

What think any of you?

Thanks ahead for any input.

:)I'm running the Michelin X LT2. 70000 warranty, not noisy, works in the snow, good road tire++. Probably not as good in the mud as the AT2. The MS (orignal OEM tires) looks about the same as the New Michelin X LT2 with less warranty.

Ok, it's done! I just had the LT2's installed yesterday for the wonderfull price of $1,058. 79. . They are working great in the snow i must say, no slipping whatsoever. I was faced with that very difficult question , White lettering showing or Not? I figured I'd try a new look and have the letters showing, I hope that doesn't come back to haunt me. .

LTG—LtX's all the way around?? 'cause I'm only 1/2 way there but agree on traction. As to the 'show' with the michelins - if ya got it flaunt it!!:-laf

yes, all the way... I just washed the truck and tire shined those puppies and they really really look great! I'll take some pics and post them soon...

bump up
Have 65,000 on BFG Rugged trail OE so need new tires. Have been looking at the Michelin A/T2 but wondered if there were updates to this thread.

I just removed 2 from the rear.

I recently started towing and thought I would appreciate a bit more bite that my old LTX A/S didn't offer, bought 2 LTX AT2, also impressed, more off highway bite, but not a full blown off road.

The very first time I towed with the OLD A/S set, no problems, but ever since the AT2's went on, significant noticeable tail wag and when towing or empty for that matter, that ain't pleasant.

This past saturday, I towed my rig about 50 miles on the AT2's with several sessions of tail waging. When I got home I put on 2 old A/S tires on the rear, I have a complete spare set of steel wheels w/tires. Put the rig on the road with no changes and all of the tail wag was gone, tracked like it was on rails.

I advised my tire guy a while back about my concern, he knows that I had a spare set of wheels and only used these for my towing trips, which have been few so far. He exchanged the AT2's for M/S2. Not the same as the A/S these have cross cuts in the tread ribs, not the big tall open tread blocks.

No road report yet, but one change went from tread block squirm to laser guided steering, and I gave the rig a few inputs to th wheel, STABLE with the old tires.

Hey Gary, the Michelin LTX At2 were a great tire for me... super stable and excellent tracking in the all conditions that I drove them in. Do you think it is possible that the "tailwagging" you felt was due to the mix of tires-- AT2 on the back and A/S on the front... maybe different sidewall stiffness or tread design led to your wag, not so much the AT2 in and of itself??

I have had the AT2's on my truck for about 35K miles so far. They have been really good tires, they worked really well in the snow we received last winter, they are awesome on wet and dry roads, and they seem to carry weight really well. I haven't measured the tread depth, but I wouldn't think mine have worn even a 1/4 of the way down yet.

I will add this though, I had the same squirrely feeling in mine, until I had about 1-2K miles on mine. This was both empty and with my 20ft car trailer loaded down. It was a little disheartening, but then around the 2K mark, they settled in really well and have been excellent ever since. Right now, looking as if I will get 60-70K out of them, I would buy another set. I would like to have an E rated 285/70R17 though. I have found my truck a little lacking with the skinnier stock sized tires back on, but nothing too alarming. Plus, a shade more ground clearance wouldn't hurt anything. No complaints out of the tires so far. Scotty

Seafish,

Unknown.

The tire shop suggested this but when I was trying to drive a straight line, no steering changes and the truck rear end with a 30' 9000 Lb trailer starts dancing L-R R-L etc. , that was not comfortable and I probally did have a couple thous on them when they came off. It was bad enough that the Mrs. noticed it and with a new adventure (trailer camping) just starting that feeling was very discerncerting. New tires will be tested hopefully this Sunday, I have a lot of work on my rig, my brake actuator was subject to a recall, passed insp, but I'm not trusting it, its being replaced.

i ran my A/T2 for just over 37K, before they were worn out. worst pair of Michelin's I have ever had. I rotated them every 4k, and didn't tow with them at all. I put M/S2 on mid June and now have 6,600 miles on them with no wear showing.

I think i just got a bad batch, as i always get over 60K out of my Michelins. Going to be putting a set of Michelin's on the wife's SUV in Oct, and a set of their snow tiers on my 16yr old daughters Mini then too.

i have been to Michelin's North American HQ, and have never run anything other then Michelin's or BFG's in the last 10 yrs.

I have pretty much ran BFG's for the longest time, and this is my first set of Michelins. Sorry to hear you only got 37K out of yours. Hoping it was just a bad set of tires. I have 30K on mine and so far they are holding up well, hope they don't drop off too much on the other half of their life. Scotty
