the truck all of a sudden is making a noise . the noise is in the head area (high on the motor, like fuel rail or higher, driver side and seems to be around 2,3,4 cylinder. )

it is a mild resonating, kinda tapping noise. it is matched with rpm when raised.

No codes, oil level appears to be the same, and no smoke.

I authorized a valve adjustment to see if it was the noise.

All valves good. (no change in noise)

*tech is clueless

*he also states that he cant turn off individual injectors. (only cap the fuel lines)

is this right?

they did take off the sensor on the rail and swapped a new one (like a pop off if pressure is to high) no change in noise

Exhaust temp is even on all cylinders.

Please help, losing money and time waiting and twisting their arm to keep it in the bay.

Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!

TIA

There have been several posts on TDR about the blue clamps that hold the fuel lines that run to each injector getting loose ,particularly on cylinder # 4 and #5. It is very possible that the tapping you hear is only the fuel line vibrating in the clamp, that is moving with each fuel delivery pulse. Check the blue clamps at each injector!!!

Of course, it is also possible that it is something else entirely, BUT it is a quick and cheap fix if you catch it before the fuel line breaks or gets a pinhole leak from wearing through against the clamp.

Let us know what you find... since it does not seem as if the dealer where your truck is at is knowledgable about Diesel trucks, I recommend that you check the clamps yourself!!!!!

Right there. Request... No, demand a different tech, or take to another shop. I'd go as far as not paying them since they do not know what they are doing.

DRBIII has had the ability to turn off individual cylinders among a variety of other diagnostic functions (though not nearly as much as the Ford NGS #@$%! ) since the first 24v rolled of the line in '98. 5.

That dealer service department is clueless. Recover your truck and drive it down to Athens, TX and turn it over to TDR member Mike Mullenax at Elder Dodge. Mike can diagnose and repair it.

Call Elder and talk to Mike first to make sure he will be able to work on it asap.

update:
grapevine dodge say drive it till it breaks. they still cant find the problem.
They will honor the warranty till 105K miles for a failure due to this noise. They wanted me to authorize money to tear the head off, then see if its covered by warranty. That after they twisted my arm to pay for "valve adjustment", and no more time on the rent car because they keep putting my truck off. )[/U]

I left and got on access road floored it and left at least a 100ft cloud of black smoke! remember its all stock, so normally its 3-4 ft. (no more abnormal smoke after that. )

(prearranged i took it to straight to another dealer, even further from my house )

that dealer knows how to use the computer to killer individual injectors.
they start on it in the morning!!
I hope its just injectors!!
thanks Harvey!!
(I talked to him he is definitely knows his stuff. I took it to a larger dealer at his recommendation. )

JF, just curious if you got a chance to check the fuel injection line clamps??

I found a link for you to check out--

https://www.turbodieselregister.com...17740-ticking-loose-injection-line-clamp.html

Not saying that IS your problem, but definitely worth checking out...

yes they check it initially.
it also made the noise with the lines removed when 2,3,4 were capped off on the fuel rail.
good idea though.

Did they replace rail pressure sensor, or the rail relief valve? You statement is not real clear. I have heard a relief valve popping off, seating and un-seating, It was on Bryan Howell's (DPP) truck while on the dyno. The popping sound seemed to keep time with rpm.

after telling that tech several times over several days, to check the fuel lines/clamps, he still could not find the cause. they told me drive it till it breaks either extending the warranty out till 106K miles, (or pay to tear down the motor with my cash up front) (Grapevine dodge, grapevine tx).

i immediately took it to another dealer, and it was going in to the bay the following morning. at 8:15 am they called and said it was the #4 injector line clamp!!! $65 dollars latter i was on my way!! (Dallas dodge was great!!)

JF, glad you finally got it fixed, and I won't say ... . ;) :-laf

Maybe some of those "tech" should sign up on TDR so we can help em' fix these things

A couple years ago, I gave my local family owned Dodge service manager a subscription to TDR for the first year.

He loves reading the magazine, talks about it on the rare occasions when I stop in, though I don't know if he has used the forums to help out his customers... :-laf

Thankfully, He has a decent, thoughtful truck mechanic there, a young man who drives his own CTD. Still, TDR brethren have helped me out way more then the dealership on the few things that have gone wrong with my truck.

I added an update to my findings on my loose #4 clamp. https://www.turbodieselregister.com...17740-ticking-loose-injection-line-clamp.html I have not taken any of the other clamps off to compare to, but the thin washer under the bolt head on my #4 dished into the larger hole in the mounting bracket, it got loose again. Repaired with a #10 washer that I selected from the "AN" tray at my hardware store.

Training is vital, experience and looking for the unexpected, costly, finding the darn thing: PRICELESS.
