Just made a run to vegas on buisiness an i think I ended up with a bad tank of fuel. Shortly after filling (within about 100miles) it started studdering real bad and had no power and wouldn't rev past 2000 rpm. I couldn't remember the last time I changed the fuel filter so I stopped and picked one up. Changed it in the parking lot and everything was back to normal. Well headed home about 50. miles outside of phoenix

it started doing it again. I limped it to phx and stopped and got another filter hoping to get home to tucson so I could drop the fuel. Changed the filter but it didn't fix it. Now I'm stuck in phx waiting for a tow truck. There are no check engine lights, it is idleing fine but will not rev above 2000. If it does rev past that it cuts out really bad. Its a 2003 3500 2 wheel drive with the nv 5600. Please, any help is appreciated.

There is fuel in the bowl with the filter. If I shut it off and cycle the key a few times to cycle the lift pump it will start and rev better for a few minutes

Sounds like you need to put a pressure gauge on after the filter and get a reading.

Are there any codes?

Give us these two pieces of info and we can zero in on the problem.

Godspeed,
Trent

I haven't gotten an ibd scanner on it yet. I also have a quadzilla xzillaraider module. It has the same symptpms whether the box is on or off.

Fuel pump. I assume OEM canister mounted pump. Cycle the key in 15 second intervals to prime the bowl and it should run a little better.

Not necessarily the pump or filter. I had a problem like this and finally dropped the tank to find a vaseline type substance clogging the mesh screen at the tank pickup. I have a pressure gauge and it would only read a max of 5psi during this. I had stopped in Colorado and picked up a new pump from Cummins but waited till I got home to install it, to my surprise it did not fix the problem. I disconnected the fuel line from the tank to the pump and blew air back into the tank and viola 14 psi on the gauge which only lasted about 1/2 mile till the 5psi showed up again which led to dropping the tank. I cut the sock off and installed a fleetguard strainer inline.

Mr. Frazier, your symptoms are exactly the same as I had after I got a bad tank of fuel. Changed the FF twice in 1 tankfull before it was ok.

Unfortunately I just put a ff on it (3rd one this tank) and its still doing it. I heading back to get it now going to pressure check the system to see if its my low pressure pump.

i had the same problem. . i know i had bad fuel when i imported my truck from baltic countries but it was not that. . the canister around my intank pump had some kind of problem the thing in bottom of it was stuck somehow just droped the tank didnt fin a problem and then it just worked think it was that

but notice i have in tank pump yours dont right? and it was only when 1/4 of tank was left

For those who asked, yes i do still have the external lift pump. I just bought a fuel pressure gauge to test the lift pump pressure, where do i tap into the system to do this?

One way is to get a banjo bolt that is drilled and tapped through the head of the bolt and attach a grease gun hose between it and the sending unit. The banjo bolt is screwed into the "in" line of the CP3.

Another way would be to get a "T" with hose barbs that will fit the short piece of rubber hose in the "In" line to the CP3 and attach the grease gun hose fitting to the "T" in some manner.

Sorry for the delayed response, I've been quite busy lately. So I ordered a new lift pump from Genos Garage (as well as a fuel pressure guage, rail pressure guage, and guage mount for them). I installed the guages initially without changing the pump. Just as suspected the pump would only make 5 psi of pressure when keyed on. Once started the pressure would dwindle to 0 then the truck would start hesitating and die.

I was pretty sure of it being the lift pump now (thank goodness I hadnt wasted the money for the lift pump... ). I replaced the lift pump and fuel filter and started it. The pressure went up to 11 when I turned the key on and it started right away, everything appeared to be working fine. tonight on my way to work I was watching the fuel pressure guage and it isnt holding any pressure. The truck is still running fine but the guage is reading zero. I can get it to go up to about 4 psi while running if i let off the throttle and keep it in gear, otherwise it is right at zero. If I shut it off and key the ignition again it builds back to the 11-12 psi but as soon as I start it it drops to 5 or below and gradually declines to zero. Any ideas? is this normal?

Rail Limiting valve Or COV... Both are easy fix... remove banjo from valve on rail,MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOME WAY OF CATCHING THE FUEL FROM BANJO,it is part of the the return system,Then unplug the FCA and start, ONLY for few seconds... ... . if fuel is coming from the valve its done and will need to be replaced. THE COV is very hard to check install its just easier to replace . If you have any questions feel free to contact Me until 9am CST. .

Call Me... . Cascade Over flow Valve. These are the 4 most important items to have with YOU at all times FCA,COV,Pressure Sensor, and T&C constant Pressure relief Valve,If 04/03 and still have the lift attach to the housing carrier 1 extra Pump. These can all be change with common tools anywhere accept extreme cold.
