22K on an 08 2500 4x4 Auto. Had a bunch of dpf error codes over the first 1. 5 years of ownership that were handled at the dealership with just cleaning out the dpf and sensors plus the software flash updates. Since 4/2010, no error codes, but last week the truck just went into limp mode (low idle, poor shift, erratic RMPs). Towed to dealer and they had to replace the turbo, EGR, dpf, etc. !



I drive the truck 70/30 highway/city. Always use the exhaust brake, never get above 5th in the city and try to keep my revs around 1500-1800 around town. Plus I never let it idle (fortunately not a lot of traffic here).



My question is, unless I start doing a lot of heavy towing and run it 90% on the highway, will this dpf BS just keep happening? Should I cut my losses now and get something else? Or do you guys have the magic formula for preventing this from happening again?

For at least 8 months it runs fine, then has a bunch of codes. Do you know what the problem was? Unless the truck was smoking the dealer did not have to replace the DPF. You need to know the root cause, but depending on how good the tech was you may never know.
 
Did it set codes when it went into the limp mode? If you know the codes that were set someone may be able to help understand what went wrong.

They probably just forced a regen and cleaned the turbo and EGR. This is standard procedure for the 6. 7 before they replace the Turbo to the newer version. The early turbo's were prone to the variable geometry turbo ring seizing up, but D/C won't do anything until they have been cleaned at least once. I would see how things go before you claim a lemon law case, if your State has the law.

You know to be honest I had my 08 for almost 4 yr's and for a while I was driving 500 miles a week just in town when I could i drove it hard and when on freeway I drove it just as hard and never had any troubles I would say just drive it hard and you will be ok

I would try and find another dealer with some knowledgeable techs. In my 08, once they replaced the turbo and re-flashed it, I never had another problem with it. Traded it for a 2010, it had 64000 miles on it and still going strong.

I hadn't noticed you traded your '08 for a new '10.

Did you change anything with the new one other than it being a new Gen IV?

My '08 has 40k miles, and I drive mine 70% highway and 30% on the job site. I don't tow anything, I do not run my truck hard, and I don't use the exhaust brake often. I have not had any issues with my truck yet, and I'm guessing that after they have replaced everything and then re-flash your truck, you won't have any issues as well.
 
Forgot to mention, that included them going to Arlington, Tx and bringing it to Springfield, Mo. Also window tint and spray in bed liner.
 
I know that Dodge dealer in Springfield, MO. They are good people.

Several years ago when my '06 was new and in warranty (truck warranty only lasted 2 1/2 months) I had a problem early one morning after sleeping overnight in a Wal-Mart parking lot off I-44. I think the alternator failed, don't remember now. I looked up Dodge dealers in my Garmin gps and drove straight to that dealer. I explained that I was passing through, transporting, couldn't wait for a part. They pulled an alternator off a new truck in inventory and sent me on my way. Not many dealers will do that.

I was impressed and grateful and recommended them to my old Navy friend who lives in Shell Knob as you do. He had a lousy old Furd 7. 3 dually at the time. Around that same time I had let him drive my '06 Ram to retrieve his fifth wheel from somewhere up in northern MO where his Furd had stranded him and he had to dump his trailer to have the Furd repaired. After he felt the difference in towing ability between my Dodge and his Furd he wanted to abandon his Furd alongside the highway.

My old friend went to that Dodge dealer in Springfield and bought a new '06 Ram. He still has it with about 100k on the odometer and loves it.
 
The problem with waiting till the warranty is up to do the deletes is!!!
1 You have dumped HOW much soot into the engine during that time?
2 You have been washing the oil off the cyl walls during regen, and lots of guys end up with fuel in the crankcase.
3 you spent HOW much money on fuel, during that time???
4 you got it HOW Hot????
By time the warranty is up, your truck has been thru hell and back just trying to breath, keep cool and survive having a ton of soot thru it. I did my deletes as soon as I could get them.
