Clark,I wonder if the twisty nature of Hwy 1 is contributing to the wear?

That's a really good point ... . likely the roads I drive DO have something to do with the faster wear... it seems only logical that higher lateral forces on the tire will result in faster wear, right ?? And of course, Hwy 128, and most of the county roads that I drive, are even twistier then Hwy 1 !!! Oo. #@$%! :-laf

Michelin could sell all the 285-75-17 E rated tires they could manufacture.

So how do we go about convincing them of that... Does anyone here have an inside track with Michelin?? Do we start an online petition and get people to sign up and send that to them ?? Whaddya guys think??

PS -- Dave, PM me and let me now how you are liking the Toyo MT's ??

In retrospect, The heavy ribs that seem to part of the carcass are coming up pretty qiuck. Next time around I'm going to really check my choices. They run smooth though.

So how many miles on your LTX-AT2's ??

I haven't put my tread depth gauge in it yet, but just casual looking dosen't look reassuring @ 20K. My driving cycle has changed big time- much more local driving. I really doubt I'll get the service I got out of the first set. Those ribs kill the deal.

I damaged one rear tire, and had to replace very recently, so I do have something to go by. I'll do a comparison ASAP.

Yup... that's about what I saw out of mine, though IIRC I ran em to almost 23k.

Others are getting more though... I wonder what SBeretz is up to in mileage now??

I checked the tread depth today. My rear tire is considered new and has about 1500 mi. The others have about 20K.

New tire @ tread= 17/32 @ rib= 8/32

other rear tire @ tread= 13/32 and @ rib is about 0. It's pretty upsetting. I don't know why the design is like that. I think It'll be BFG's or Coopers next time!

<<<update>>>

Just wanted to update on my tires. The new tire I mention above just got damaged (again ) Anyway, a twig about 1/4" dia came up and went through the sidewall on the inside on a sharp angle. Amazing.

Back to Costco, I find out I'm covered by road hazard. That eases the pain, but come to find out that this tire has been DISCONTINUED. I'm told they found one to give me. I believe there is now a MT/2 or some other. I wonder if there are ribs are on those?

Just pulled the ones off of the '04. 5 and replaced them with a set of BFG OEM take-offs that we got for a good deal. The AT2's were unusable at just over 35K. Not at all what we expected after such good service off the other Michelin tires we have had.

Scotty,

how are your AT2's holding up in terms of wear??

I think mine are holding up excellent. Here is a picture I just went outside and took. 51K (almost 52K) miles on them. That is a penny in there for reference. I measured the tread depth and the worst I came up with . 295". That is still over a solid 1/4" of tread. I am not saying they aren't worn, but I believe I still have alot of useable miles left in them. They still grip the road well in wet and slimy conditions. I am hoping they are still decent enough to make it through a Winter without major drama. I am headed to Oregon for an elk hunt on Friday, so if I need more traction, I will just chain up.

I love the tires. The only thing I might do different, is go to a 285 sized AT2 or BFG AT next time. I can't see getting much better performance out of any tire. The original BFG's and Toyo's were very much done at 35K. . These are still looking good and performing well. I would say I should finish out around 70K before they are totally shot or just not useful to me. Scotty

Of those two, only BFG offers an E-rated 285-70-17. Michelin doesn't seem to want to get involved w/oversized E rated Lt tires. I'm sold on Toyos.

I'll be lucky to get 45K out of my Michelin latitudes on the Pilot. I paid $165/ea at Costco. They are an 80K rated tire. Rotated and rebalanced every 5K. Not a fan of their product anymore.

Man, that does stink about your tires... I like BFG AT's as well, and would like to stick with the E rated tire, if only for my piece of mind and honestly, the traction is about the same with both the AT2 and AT's. At least from my experience. They both are great tires for rain, light mud, snow and trailering duties. Scotty

Actually, if you read the second review (Aloha Bob), dated 10/05/11, on the Michelin AT2 homepage--

LTX A/T2 | Michelin Tires

You will see that the reviewer states that the AT2 is currently out of production, though of course he does not say why, cause he is only reviewing the tire.
I DO hope that it is onle a temp situations, because these tires, in a stock size, are certainly on my short list in terms of quality.

Since posting on this thread in January, I bought a set of the MS2 tires, I think I have less than 5K on only dry dirt and dry/wet pavement so far, but winter season is upon us... .

70K wearout was too hard to pass up and the MS2's were in stock the day I stopped by the tire store, would have had to order the AT2's.

Well, I went to Oregon and back, about 7K miles. I traveled all over the back country with the tires and they did fine. They don't have the same bite they had when new, but still plenty to get around the dirt and muddy roads. I just about at 60K for the tires and they are still holding up fine. No issues with them at all. I really think I will be able to get through the Va winter with them. I would say I will easily clear 70K with them. I really don't wanna put new tires on the truck just yet.

I do think I will be going with a Cooper next time around. I like the Michelins a bunch, but if I can buy Coopers and stick with an American tire of good quality, I would like to do so. I am not against getting another set of Michelins and would recommend them to anyone asking for a great tire. Scotty

According to SAM's Club website Michelin XPS Ribs are now $308. xx but other Michelin tires for 16" wheels are only about $225 which is only slightly more expensive than other brands.

Here is the 17" tire chart. Search Results

For my tire purchace money Michelin is by far the best choice.
