I'm looking at a couple of upgrades to my 04 3500 4x4 6 spd. I'd like to install an exhaust brake and would like input on which one to use, ease of installation, etc. Also, has anyone tried the PSM cold air intake and cool hose? This seems like a good idea to me get cooler air and keep it cool. I pull a 35' fifth wheel and a 30' gooseneck loaded with IH tractors, even with my juice with an attitude set on tow I've seen EG temperatures push 1250+ in hilly country every help to keep it cooler would be nice.

04 I like your Amsoil every where, me to I just finished installing a by pass filter I'm anxious to see the results.

With an 04 I would run an Airaid MIT in your intake tube and try to find the lower elbow off of a 04. 5-07 motor, they have directional vanes that improve the turbo's efficiency.

With the MIT and HD CAI I get very low intake air temps, not sure a cool hose could make them any lower as I am only 3-12° above ambient under normal conditions and 1° change in IAT is supposed to make a 1. 5° change in EGT's.

The Jacobs had too many instances of vacuum pump failure for my taste plus, it uses an odd size belt (I know, you can bypass the pump when it fails. . ). So I went with a PacBrake which gives more braking power at lower RPMs (same at max RPM). It has served me well over the last 6+ years and you end up with on-board air to fill tires or whatever.

I have had the PRXB PacBrake on my 04. 5 6 speed for most of 114,000 miles of HEAVY towing. It has been near flawless. The exception being one of the original air solenoids went bad at about 60,000 miles. They replaced it at no charge to me. I would reccomend the Pac for the simplicity and factory backing.

Agreed. My friend's Jakebrake compressor was showing signs of seizing@ 33K. He got a new one @ Cummins for $235.

I don't think a cool air intake will help your full power egt's. I have never seen an ounce of difference on a 100* day or 20* below, under full power. The egt's are the same. The cooler the air the more efficient the combustion which translates to a bigger fire so egt's stay the same. Under cruise conditions egt's will be cooler, but then they are not an issue anyway.

the bd and pack have the most brake hp. i like the bd over the pac. the pac had a very bad location for the compressor and we had failures along with many others, i think they have moved it on the new kits but if it is still motor mount make sure you move it to another location. give the juce away and get a smarty jr. will help a lot. your 04 does not have the straightning vanes in the elbow like the 04. 5 does, when you get the coolhose and psm kit get a T. A. G. at the same time. the airfilter box off of a 6-7 is direct bolt on. it flows a lot more air with lower restriction than the stock 5. 9. you can pick them up this site for about $30. gut and port the grid heater.

My EGT's WOT vary based on ambient temp. I can't hardly break 1200° when the temps are below 50° when towing, but as the ambient heats up so do my EGT's. Cooler air is more dense so you will have more O2 per combustion but the fuel should not change, so your combustion temp should be lower due to a leaner condition.

Timing does play a role in this as well. I know that on 3rd gen's there have been several studies of IAT vs EGT and they came back with 1. 5° and 1. 6° per independent study.

As far as Jake brake compressors go I have 65K miles on mine without an issue and my dad has 75K miles on his. The early brakes seemed to have issues, but the later ones don't. Also when a individual truck goes thru multiple pumps its generally from a leak in the vacuum line and not the compressor.

I had the edge juice and switched to the Smarty and use the edge for guages now, 150-200 degree drop across the board. On the cold air intake, I took the home made version one step further, I put a 45 degree elbow at the bottom so that the bottom of the elbow sticks down about an inch and a half below the air dam. I have not yet gotten the paper filter wet yet. I do plug it in the winter of course though. You don't mention if you have an automatic or not, if Auto, you may need to do more to get the best from the e-brake.

If I were to gut my grid heaters, how would I start the truck in Northern In. , It gets cold here. Otherwise, thanks for your input I'll checkout the airbox and T. A. G. . Where on this site?

the grid heater is not needed to start the truck. last year during the cold snap my truck started at 27* below zero it is more for smog and the industrial 5. 9's do not have them the cummins part # for the block that is in it's place is 3922484

as users add aftermarket air boxes they will sell there stock boxes. every time i seen a post on there new s&b or airaid or others i contacted them and bought enough of them to change out my entire fleet.
