I drove 1. 2 miles from home and truck died. It appears there is no fuel pressure. What could this possibly be?

There is a full tank of fuel.

Starter would crank but would not start. First time I have had a problem like this.

Had to have vehicle towed to dealer. Any ideas/ suggestions appreciated.

Dealer stated problem is the "High Pressure Pump". I assume this is the Bosch CP3 Pump? Cost for repairs is over 2100. 00 and checked with 2 dealers for the estimates.

Make sure the pump in the tank is working, you should be able to hear it if working. It will shut you down if not. Just had one fail in my truck. If so it is a easy fix, drop the tank, (empty fuel first) remove and replace pump. Pump is around $350 - $400. Make sure that is the problem before they replace the CP3 pump. They don't fail very often.

If you are out of warranty I would find a local diesel shop and get it fixed there. Todd at TC is the CP3 guru, and he is here on TDR.

Trouble shooting this is as easy as opening up the fuel filter to see if it's empty. If it is then the dealer is probably off the mark and it's your in-tank pump.
Beware that some dealers still think the HP pump has to be bad if the tank pump quit and that is not necessarily the rule. This way of thinking is a left over from the earlier days of injector pumps.

Bump the key to the start position and go back by the tank. You should hear the fuel pump if it is working. It will run for about 30 seconds.
How many miles on the truck?

Don't assume you have no fuel pressure just because you have a no start... ... ... . You must have RAIL pressure to start.

you do not have a bad cp3. do three simple test before taking it to someone else. first there is only one electrical connection on the cp3, located on the back. unplug it and see if it starts. if no start, follow the lone from the bottom of the fuel filter to the cp3. take the bandjo bolt out at the cp3, if outside just turn the key on and see if fuel flows. inside use a freezer bag over the line. if fuel next look at the rail, this is what the injector lines are hooked to along with a line from the cp3. there is a device sticking straight up on the rail with a bandjo bolt on top, remove this bolt and place a sandwitch bag over the line, crank the engine starter for 20 seconds, no fuel should come out of the device. past this i think it sounds like you will need a little help from a good mechanic or friend to do a drawdown test.

I wish to Thank each TDR member who replied to my thread on this 5. 9 fuel issue. As an update for future reference, Dodge Dealer results were as follows:

"When hooked up to scan tool - "no codes"
"No fuel rail pressure while cranking the engine - NONE AT ALL"
"Checked Lift Pump Output, Almost 1000 ML in 10 seconds, passed, checked the output of the high pressure pump, has nothing coming out of it".
Spec is 70ML or more in 30 seconds of crank time with the FCA unplugged; needs high pressure pump, installed new pump and phased to engine. Started, engine now starts and runs, test drove, system is operating at the design at this time"

2 hours diagnostics(CDDR), Fuel pump installation - 2 additional hours (CDDR), Seal (5086853AA), R5191780AD Pump-Fuel Injection (ouch!)

Had to utilize dealer as no known local Diesel mechanics. Interested in new TDR Group meeting in Jan at PETROS Pittston PA Truck stop.

Hopefully this may assist another member with diagnosis and repair. Note:Dealer did not have fuel pump in stock and had to order it in. Truck at dealer for 5 days.

Might want evaluate where you buy fuel very closely. A CP-3 with that low of miles is uncommon, not impossible just very rare.

Billkid67: I feel your pain.
Same thing happend to me on Saturday 12/15/12. Truck has 128,000 Miles on it and I add Stanadyne Lubricity Formula at every fill-up to compensate for the ULSD.
Moving along in heavy Christmas Shopper thaffic, pulled into the left 3rd lane to take the next on ramp on the left and the truck just shut off.
No warning, was running fine no low power, no stumble and no codes after it shut off.
Towed to dealer and got the exact same diagnosis on Monday, and the same price tag.
No one else in the area that works on HPCR's is any cheaper.
Dealer still has the truck, had to order pump I should get it back by tomorrow. Hopefully.

Foxy005;
Epidemic? I heard of another one locally with the same problem this month as well! We should consider sending letter to Chrysler LLC and Cummins on the issue.

Maybe start a POLL on This site to see how may CP3 failures there are out there recently.
Unfortunately I don't see any options on the new forum layout to start a poll.
Maybe someone or a moderator can chime in and tell us how to go about starting a poll on this subject.
Also would be nice to have a CP3 Guru chime in to address the question of wether USLD fuel could be a culprit in causing internal failure in these pumps.

Excellent Idea to have a POLL on CP3 Failures. This is a great idea for other TDR issues as well. Hope the webmaster notices this thread and considers it.

NOT saying that a poll is a bad idea, but I can tell you right now there have NOT been that many failures of them, and certainly not an "epidemic". . in fact, yours are the first I have read about in YEARS.

Now a poll on ball joint failures, that's a different matter... the poll results probably woudn't even fit on one page. LOL

I believe cp3 failures are few and far between, as far as putting out the proper volume, i am seeing more of that on the older or heavier used trucks than any.

Not that many failures on stock or close to stock during warranty mileage. Now if you throw in contamination damage the number goes up some
