Ever see really loose mounting bolts on the 5.9 injectors?

Has anyone used a different fuel filter other then the Fleetguard FS19856. I noticed that Wix has a 7 Micron Filter that says it use some form of Glass in the filter. Or is there another brand that would be as good as the Fleetguard?

ACerf, I have used the Fleetguard that I got from Geno's. It is supposedly a 7 micron filter. After recently replacing my injectors I decided to use a Baldwin PF7977 that is suppose to be 5 micron and installed the GDP 2-mic Kit. There is a thread currently running that was started by my neighbor BDaugherty, "2 Mic FF or H2O Sep?" that touches on this. The long and the short of it is that Bosch wanted the fuel filtered to about 4 microns and Chrysler ignored their suggestion and so it opened up an after-market filter set-up from Glacier Diesel Power that many of us have gone to. Is it worth the effort and the expense? Time and miles will tell. All I know is that if there is a way to filter the fuel any better than stock and increase the life of those injectors I'm going to try it.

I run the FF from Genos and have had the GDP filter on my truck for 8 years. Both are changed out at 10k mile intervals. No problems whatsoever. My thought was to keep it simple and protect my investment. Ed B

I found a spread sheet that was put together by another member on this website that provided filtration numbers on various filters; which I have kept. This list the Fleetguard filter FS19856 having a 7 absolute rating and the WIX 33585XE as an 8 absolute filter which means to me that the Fleetguard is a better filter. Now the best filter for the 3rd gen built between 03 and 07 for the 5.9L engine in micron rating would be the Baldwin PF7977; this is a 5 absolute rated filter. Also the WIX filter may not be water separating type filter you would need to check with the manufacture of the WIX to make sure.

You could put on the GDP big line kit and run the Cat fuel filter 1F0750/1F0749 as a secondary filter after the primary filter for additional filtration of 4 micron absolute rating. If the Cat filter would fit in your truck or you could use a Fleetguard FF5320 which is a 5 micron rated absolute filter. I use the Fleetguard filter FF5320 on my truck with the big line kit.

ACerf, if you elect to go in this direction with the GDP 2-mic Kit you might even consider using a Donaldson P551313 filter in the kit which is rated I believe at about 3 microns. (I don't believe testing procedures allow for certifying a filter any finer than this.) It is interchangeable with the FF 5320. I buy them from the local Cat dealer for about $15.

Thanks for all of your input on this subject. I will check into the Baldwin filter sounds like the best going. I have been presently changing the Fleetguard filter every 5,000 miles, at the recommendation of a mechanic I use. I am sure a secondary filter system would be ideal and would help filter the fuel better.
Where have you guys been buying the Baldwin filter from??

I wouldn't change your fuel filter that often. A used filter is more effective than a new filter, and you will not plug a PF7977 in 5,000 miles unless you fill your tank with DIRTY DIRTY fuel.

Cat has a service bulletin about over servicing fuel filters and their recommendation not to do it too often.

Stick with the PF7977 on 15K mile or 18 month intervals, whichever is sooner.

Good advice on not changing filters too early. On my truck I added three "5-psi warning light" switches: one after the two-tank switching valve and before the stock filter canister, one between the stock canister and the add-on GDP filter head, and one between the GDP head and the CP3. The first one monitors fuel pump pressure, while the second and third monitor fuel filter plugging.
