Yea what an idiot; I had ATF4 for the transfer case in a mis-labled bottle and was topping off the NV5600 and put a 1/2 to 1 cup of fluid in before I noticed the red color. Do you think it will harm anything I have transmission coolers I think I have 7+quarts in the transmission. Should I drain and refill due to this small amount of ATF. Thought I read that ATF is not compatable with some of the metals in the NV5600? I have a small transmission leak out the real seal and requires a 1/2 a quart a year. When the clutch goes I will also replace the seal. Just wanting some advice from the experts it has been bothering me if I should change out the oil. It is so dam expensive it is not an insignificant cost. Who knows might even make it shift smoother?? Thanks in advance for any response.

I can't imagine how even a FULL cup (quarter of a quart!!) could adversely affect anything in the NV5600 as long as the rest of the fill is the correct fluid.

I wouldn't worry a bit about that small of an amount. Only thing I see from adding a cup ATF+4 is maybe a few PPM more of Boron and an undetectable amount of Potassium... Assuming you filled with Penzoil Synchomesh.

As far as the non-compatibility, I'm guessing that is based on a full replacement of fluid with ATF+4

I don't think it will hurt it either, but as anal as I can be, I'd just change it anyway. How many miles do have on the current oil?

I only have 10k on the oil but if it is going to make other seals start to leak maybe I should change it. It is so diluted that I would think it would not harm the seals but proabably not worth the risk.

Hard call. A tablespoon of coolant in the ATF oil will trash an auto transmission.

I don't know how much ATF it would take to start affecting the seals - make them swell up then start leaking.

Water soluble coolant in ATF is VERY different then ATF in gear oil….let's not forget that Dodge actually specs ATF+4 for the G56.

That being said, I also don;t have an answer on how much ATF might adveresley effect any manual transmission seals, but I'll venture its substantially more then .25 percent, which is what the OP has in his transmission if he even put a FULL cup (8 oz) in with the rest of the 184 ounces (assuming he has overfilled the NV5600 by an extra quart as recommended to keep the front bearings lubed). Still, his choice, but I personally would not be concerned and I tend to be OCD about these things as well.

That is interesting that the G56 uses ATF. I have not run the truck yet I might just try it for awhile and see if the transmission shifts differently.

Always a good idea I like to change at 15000 mile intervals or anually I tow heavy a lot but I still think its good to change em no matter what you do with the truck.

Okay you guys talked me into it I will change it. I've been wanting to install a filter on the PTO cover. But I don't see it in the Geno's catalog anymore. Wonder if anyone sells it anymore. Wonder why Genos dropped it; does it not work?

www.quad4x4.com has the filters and yes they work really good the keep the oil clean for a long time I change the oil in my trans and transfer case annually or every 15000 miles and that filter keeps it looking good and clean the entire time honestly I ran the oil two years in a 205 transfer case and it was just barely starting to get a little black .

You'll be happy with it . You know how there's always a little black left in the oil when you change oil with the filter after about a week of driving the oil will be cleaner than the day you put it in.

Dodge specs ATF in the G56, not the manufacture. I have a '05 w/G56 and I have changed it out for Penzoil Syncromesh which is more like the manufacture specs.

I changed the transmission fluid I had 50k on the oil and it was a little dark but not bad. Saw some of the snychronizer brass flakes not many though. The design of the transmission filter is pretty ingenious and now I understand how it works. I forgot how smooth the NV5600 can be with fresh oil. I had 7 3/4 quarts of oil in the transmission when I had both fast coolers but now I only have one fast cooler and the filter on the side so it droped to 7 quarts which seems about right or if others install more oil let me know. The oil level is above the sight glass on the fast cooler. Anyway glad I changed the oil. I never tow and 90% of my miles are going 72 mph down the freeway so the transmission is not working very hard.

Glad you got it fixed to your liking..can you please link to to the tray fluid filter again directly, as the last link does not work for me for some reason. TIA.
