Whats a ball park figure foe a valve adjustemt, if I provide the gasket? 103K miles and they seem rather noisy...

Pensacola FL... if that matters

thanks

you want to know the cost of it for someone to do it... or the actual valve clearance settings... . hope you don't just want ball park settings???

I think the OP meant price. I would expect them to charge about an hour. I can do it in about 20~30 minutes so that gives them some extra room.

Yea, i was wondering the cost... I was quoted about 200bucks plus gasket, cause it was a couple of hour job... ... Seemd rather high.
I have the specs ihn the manual, but I've read on here they can be a little tighter?

thanks

It really doesn't make any difference to performance. I just adjust mine to spec and all exactly the same.
Even doing this it doesn't take long.

Should be less than 1hr job. Re-use the gasket, just wipe it down. Unless it leaks bad. If you were local I'd do it for a 12pack on good beer.

the gasket is a special wiring harness and does not need to be replaced. it is very easy to do and only takes about 1/2 hour with minimum tools. settings is 0. 010 and 0. 020

I didn't think we had to adjust our valves on these rigs? I'm pushing 170,000 on mine and I have never adjusted them. Should I get this ASAP?

Check your owners manual,I think you will find the interval is 150k for your year. It is not a do or die thing but you will find them all over. Some loose some tight, they are not on the money when they are built.

Thanks Bob, guess I should blow the dust of that owners manual as give it a good look through, since I put it away after I bought the truck new in '03... .

Kinda funny... I called a few places for the hell of it to see about an valve adjustment for my year, 2005... .
1. A diesel shop... . 4 hours ..... $320 plus gasket which is about $80= total 400 plus tax

Gulf Coast Dodge and Jeep... . 3hrs... . $315 plus tax includes gasket

Hill Kelly Dodge..... 2 1/2 hrs... . 250 plus gasket which is over 100 cause it has wires in it, plus tax.

Cant imagine that it takes 3-4 hours to unhook a battery, remove 6-8 bolts, wiggle a few valve, bar engine over if needed, adjust 3 sets, bar engine over again, adjust 3 sets and put the valve cover back on (gasket is reusable) and hook up battery's... ... . screw them, I bought the barring over tool (40bucks) from Genos and since I have the service manual, I'm going to be a valve adjustment expert. Only other thing I dont have is a torque wrench which I will soon!! It may take me 2 hours but I'm worth 250 bucks and I wont charge my self and environmental fee either!!

rock on

To save even more time, you can leave the batts connected and just turn the eng over using the alt nut. This works better because you can slowly turn the engine while watching for the marks to line up. If you use the barring tool you either need an assistant or you have to keep rolling out to check the marks.

And on the bright side when you're wiggling the valves and screw up you don't have to be worried about the boss all over your back

never did find a valve adjustment reference in my manual, is worth while at 80,000 miles?

From my experience the majority of engines will have some on the loose side and some on the tight side, when they are all correct you may notice a smoother idle

Just because it doesn't cost me anything but time and I wanted to find out if adjusting them would make any difference to the way it runs or fuel efficiency, I adjusted them at 50K. I spent lots of time getting all of them set exactly the same (relative to Ex or In).
Made no difference what so ever.

I need to look it up but I can remember the service manual saying there isnt a set mileage to do a valve adjustment. It should be done only if there is a performance issue. If I get time I will try to find it. I had 224,000 miles on my engine and the valve cover had never been off, all the valves were within spec.
