another pic of 2007 e250 6.0 ford box van

We drove up to the Auto Show yesterday to have a look around. Ford had a section dedicated to work trucks, from 350s up to the 750 in the picture with various work body configurations. The bigger Fords had Cummins in them, the only trucks with the 6.7 Stroke were the 350s and 450s. You can't even see the engine in those trucks, nothing but plastic shrouds on the top side.
The Cummins engine in that 750 was rated for 240 HP.

Well I made good progress today. Got the HPFP aka their CP3 out. Learning the ins n outs of this 6.4. I gotta say, since I'm familiar with "real" HD diesels (I'll include our B's in that group), this engine has so much elaborate grap on it it's a lot to take in. The induction, fuel and cooling systems are WAAAY overdone! There's a whole separate cooling system just for the fuel system- separate lines, radiator, electric pump, tank etc etc. I've been seeing a lot of mention of "cavitation" during my internet research, and I first thought of liner cav, but I bit and looked at this video. There are so many hoses, connections and vulnerabilities here, and there all hard to deal with!

I just wanted to yank this one back out---

I just got this truck back after some fine service since the cab was off. NOW the front is all apart. Seems that the AC belt tensioner failed, shredded the belt, and strangled the front seal. Let's just say you AINT doing this roadside- no way no how. Here's a pic once the whole cooling module was yanked. This tensioner (@7:00) is absolutely buried until this point!

Is that an exhaust part in the 1:00 to 2:00 position?

Also, what is running off that inner belt? I see it runs the alternator, but what are the other things? Water pump and 2 idlers?

Hi Ryan. Yes that's the SECOND EGR cooler. The first is under the left head, makes a 90 and up the front and into the EGR valve/ throttle body (yes it has a gas engine like electronically controled TB.
There's a 3 belt setup. The first belt is a short- one runs just the AC with an tensioner that failed. second belt is the long one running everything else. The third is an upfit that runs a gear type hydraulic pump. As I mentioned earlier, none of this is practical to repair roadside unless you've been there before and have a full tool kit- and PATIENCE!

Just to clarify the belt question- the center is the WP see the fan clutch thread. Above that with the 4 web pulley is the PS. That is the middle belt. Keep in mind there's a dual alt version for 'lances but I doubt they fit a hyd pump too.

Every time I see the horror stories of working on Ford or GM I count my blessings having a Cummins.

When I got my truck back from getting the head gasket and tappet cover done the owner of the shop took me in and showed me a 6.0 that needed headgaskets among other issues. He said just in case you were considering a ford look at this. Had no idea had to remove the cab. The two repairs I had done were nothing compared to that according to the mechanic.

Seeing that I went from a Ford to a Dodge I have lots of experience with both.

My Ford was a 7.3. Liked it, good power, good millage. I did glow plug relays every fall, glow plugs every two years. Did a belt every year, and pully bearings every two years.

Dual mass flywheel was a disaster which got me arrested at a dealership.

Ball joints didn;t last long either on these. Did them every 80 to 100K.

I bought truck with 50K and drove it to 350K. Had maint costs in the 2 cents per mile range for parts. Labor was mine.

My 03 Dodge has it issues as well. Not impressed with the front end at all. Will be tackling drive line in the spring for u joints. 220K and I think they are original. I did front bearing right after I got it with 190k. Originals there too.

I don't like the 6 speed pattern from 5 to 6. I do like the mpg. With a smarty, larger rubber, and a light foot I am in the high 20's. My camp is 150 miles away, and I have almost got 30mpg out of it a couple times. 55mph and slight down hill most of the way.

Thankfully, I get a lot of latitude where I am so long the are few if no comebacks. Regarding the 6.0, if there's any cooling system failure like the EGR cooler, head gasket, etc where the engine may have been cooked, a complete ford reman is the fix. Nothing less.
