I know we all like to make jokes about the Detroit, but in all fairness, back in the day before turbo's, they would run circles around the Cummins and big gassers at high elevation.

Its been a long long time but weren't the 95-13's & the 125-13's shifting knobs chrome metal with a Red selector switch?

They were chrome, but after stirring that lever day in and day out the chrome would wear off on the edge by the splitter button. Then you started getting a black stain in the palm of your hand. In the summertime with a sweaty hand in a non air conditioned truck it didn't take long.....

In the early 80s a sawmill I cotracted for had an LTL Ford tri axle with a Silver 92 and I believe a 13 speed in it. Back then it was a real road raper.
 
learned to drive in a IH coe transtar with a 318 derated to 260 wiyh a 10 speed,ran from FLA to new england every week you get cramps in your right leg from holding the accelerator on the floor all the time.bought my first truck in 76,a 75 VIT Kenworth and a Great Dane refridgerated trailer,paid 50,000 for the rig,now that wont even get you a new pick-up
