Read an article on MSN news that Ford upped the there torque to 925 for '17. Horse power stayed the same. Maybe the race is on for that illusive 1000. Maybe the '19 RAM ???????? If it gets to 400/1000, it may be me wanting a new truck. Dang I love the big numbers.

You might struggle finding one with blue/purple flames. That's classy!

Well might have to do the same to the new one. I believe all that torque would make on fire anyway. HE HE HE

This diesel HP war is just stuuuuupid. Does anyone driving a 1 ton truck actually need 1000 ft pounds of torque? The latest generation trucks are already rated to tow so much weight that no longer can the average licensed person drive one without CA numbers, and in some cases a CDL. I know a guy who had to trade in his Duramax dually for a SRW because his wife needed a CDL to drive it. I kinda find it offensive that the marketing departments of these truck manufactures think so little of the consumer that they'd build and advertise something to the very people who cant legally drive it. Seems a little counter productive.

CDL, by definition, applies to individuals who are engaged in commerce. Most states do not require operators of vehicles not used in commercial operations to hold a commercial driver license (CDL). Texas requires an enhanced non-commercial license for GCWRs equal to or greater than 26,001 lbs (a Class A non-commercial if towing over 10,000 lbs with a GCWR of 26,001 or greater), but again it's not a CDL.

Rusty, the new gross weigth rating on the new trucks has stopped me from buying one. As I would need to be obtain a new drivers license with a higher rate classification for IL with my current trailer and a new truck. With my 2008 I can keep my current driver license with the trailer.

The technicalities between state regulations or stipulations was not the point. The fact that the competing big three are engaging in a battle which justifies little gain for the average consumer is the issue I have qualms over. And for that matter, what they're also doing is placing more inexperienced drivers behind the wheel of high grossing truck and trailer combinations which may or may not require a license to do so, simply because the truck ratings for a more common 1 ton are increasing into the stratosphere.

Dont get me wrong as I'm not apposed to more powerful, more capable trucks. But I'd rather see the manufactures put this energy into larger higher rated trucks like 2 ton pickups which hold more regulatory enforcement, potentially keeping the average Joe from buying one and driving off with any number of massive trailers in tow.

But maybe I'm petting the dog backwards as everyone drools over the thought of ousting their neighbors.....or as the class 8 trucking industry pushes for automatic transmission trucks in some apparent reason to gain less qualified drivers to haul around their 80 ton liability. Makes no sense to me.....but thats just my opinion.

Hell its all about the numbers and bragging rights. I would like to be the one that can brag. I am more worried about the fools that are texting, talking on the phone
and generally not paying attention to what their doing. Let them buy the truck/trailer that is too long, too heavy, and too stupid to know that they may be in over there head. I maintain CDL out of preference and because if I get stopped and they weight me I am covered. I am not in this for commercial transportation. Hell there are some OTR's that DON"T NEED TO BE over the road drivers.

No more covered than a Texas operator with a non-commercial Class A operators license. Any number of CDL holders here drop their Commercial license but retain their Class A when they retire.

Will I went from a 2005 to a 2011 and now a 2016 with 900#.
Don't regret it one bit. In fact. I LOOOOVVVVEEE towing with my 2016 compared to even my 2011 let alone the 2005. Its a rocket ship even with my Truck Camper on it. Let alone tows the toyhauler like its nothing. Did i mention I love the power? :)

Will be interesting what 2020 or 2021 trucks have, that will be the next time i jump again on it.

I guess I dont understand. Were you being funny or just not see the irony in those two sentences.....

You know what, all I did was rewrite what I read. If you think there is a problem with the manufacture building these trucks then don't buy and stay home.
Obvouisly you think its stupid and so be it.

RustyC Maybe what I should have said was the CDL might keep me from being hassled. I do keep my Health Card up to date as I do drive once in while.

All I was doing posting what I read and then comes along someone who thinks the manufactures are all wrong. IGo buy a Prius !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jim - No need to fear getting the Class A non-CDL in IL... Its only like $5, and the test is stupid easy.

If the wrong person becomes the next president, or if the GOV continues unchecked, and they attach CAFE to these beasts, the whole party will be over. Just like 1972 and the muscle wars.

I fail to see the need for more power. We have a megacab with 3:42 gears. Pulling 3610 Montana. All the power we need. Aisin auto.. Tow in 4th...never lose speed on long steep grades. I hear complaints regarding dead pedal.. Can one imagine all this power instantly going to the rear wheels?.broke u joints and axles!

Our existing trucks would break axles and u-joints if "all this power instantly went to the rear wheel". This is why we have torque management....so it doesn't "instantly" go to the rear wheels.

You seriously thought that the current 900 ft/lbs in a Ram would not break anything, but 925 would?

Shhhhh..... Cant be too opinionated around here as it apparently offends.

I'm just waiting out this HP war for when they get real serious. At the rate their going this will probably be what the 2020 Dodge will look like. Dump bed excluded..... :-laf
