I love my 16 and have only put 3500 mi on it in 9 months. No question it's night and day different from the 02 in power and comfort.
I bought this before I was basically given the 02 from my uncle who sold out of the farm. It's a little rough but nothing major and only 49k mi. I'm rebuilding the vacuum pump now and replacing belts/hoses, etc. Also ordered a new full exhaust and tow mirrors from Genos and with a decent paint job it will look great. Runs like a top.
Anyway, I was talking to a buddy with a 2011 Ford 6.7 (I know it's a Ford) and he only has 35k mi on it and both water pumps are leaking and will cost $1100 to fix. (Out of warranty) And he has a couple of issues with the DEF system that will cost $700.
I rubbed it in when I told him I just bought a new water pump for my 02 for $39.95.
I haven't had any issues with my 16, but I'm loving this 02 more every day. Especially with the few miles I put on a truck.
Im probably nuts, but I'm thinking after I get everything dialed in and looking good on the 02, I may consider selling the 16.
Things are much less expensive to repair and won't have to worry about being stranded due to a sensor putting Inv the truck into limp mod.

C"mon dward ,are seriously considering doing so........The 2002 is loud ,and facts are its dirty, but if your only putting 5K miles yearly you really don't need a diesel at all.

Had an 04.5 dually. GREAT truck.. 6speed nv5600 . It would pull our trailer 53 mph up Carson pass. The new 15 with the AISIN pulls that same grade as fast as I want. More comfort, better mpg. Electronics....

The problem as I have found out, when the warranty is up on those electronics/EPA, it gets expensive. I have a glitch in my regen, and to even find someone willing to tackle the job is hard, it's even more money with the data recorder rental/purchase then pay again for a tech to read it on Wytech. So far now, I have $800.00 in EFILive for data recording ability, also if I include my clutch upgrade to deal with the power surge that the glitch causes, it adds another $2K. So enjoy your clean EPA burdened trucks under warranty. But when warranty is up, don't be surprised to hear, "it would be better to buy a new truck, then to try and find the issue if there are no trouble codes" like I've heard. I'd take a low mileage 2003 5.9 NV5600 over any 2016 Aisin, 68rfe or G56 equipped CTD. I would just budget in a VP44 if it needed to be replaced, and purchase a dependable lift pump to protect the VP44.

Yes, however in Comifornia (not miss spelled) don't get caught. With my 07, it's not as obvious if it smokes a little. But any 4th gen, it's a dead giveaway, and it'll cost impound, penalties and reinstallation of the EPA crap, as well as being inspected by the Gestapo (DMV). It's cheaper to buy a new truck then get caught in Comifornia.

I realize you had a sub-par ownership experience with your previous truck.

However-----not ALL 2013 & newer trucks on the road are a "turd" like you owned. Some of us have delightful ownership experiences.....like me.....with 176,832 miles and 3,295 drive hours with NO EGR issues and NO emissions issues.

By the way.....2003 & newer trucks are HPCR's (High Pressure Common Rails).....not VP44 trucks. VP44 trucks were used from 1998.5 through 2002. Their dependability has been questionable over the years....but, overall, is not bad.

I have a 2008 Mega Cab and I have tracked every penny that has been put into this truck for fuel mileage, attachments and maintenance cost. I am now at 99,000 miles and my maintenance cost has been $0.12/mile, fuel cost has been $0.25/mile. Are these cost out of line for a modern diesel pick-up truck? I do not know but this is the only type of vehicle that will pull my 5er efficiently and safely; so I will continue to own a diesel pick-up truck for my needs.

 Opps, Yup your right, I'm sorry about that.

The 2014 I was driving is a Turd and is now in a law suit, but I'm not the owner, and it couldn't of happened to a nicer guy. I'll just leave it at that, but it's not the truck I'm referring to.

My 07 has the regen glitch. But it wasn't always like that, an ECM update performed in 09 changed a perfect running truck, into a nightmare. But at first it wasn't known the update caused the problem. The throttle started sticking when shifting. So the TPS was changed, then I noticed the truck would, at times, tend to surge at the higher RPM range. It turned out to be after 2000 RPM and the TPS wasn't the issue. Then it started to die after leaving an intersection, and would mysteriously come back to life in a split second. I finally found the common denominater that warned me of an impending issue, the EB would come on when arriving at an intersection. Then it just died during a shift between 5th and 6th, while I was looking for a place to park it for the emergency at hand, it came back to life. So I went strait to the dealer with it and found it to be in regen and doing just what I reported. Two techs and I with Witech connected went on the test drive with one tech driving and the other holding the computer and verifying it was in regen. So in 2011 I'm climbing Chiriaco Pass at 23K GCW, when a Simi passing another Simi caused me to slow down and when the lane was cleared I accelerated and when the RPM hit 2000 it surged in power and toasted my DMF clutch. It was drivable but I had to be cautious. So the SMF was installed with a DD clutch to hold when it surges. Keep in mind it never threw a code. There more to the story but for another day/post.

I loved my 2005. I loved my 2011 even more.....and my 2016 is like OMG I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!!!! They have each gotten more expensive, but I have had very good luck will all 3 trucks daily driving and heavy weekend play use. Hopefully before my next truck, my home mortgage will be done and gone! When I look at car prices, I'm like who the hell would pay that for something that can't tow or haul... :)
