2nd gen 24v engine with a knock question

Someone very close to me has a 2002 complete 24v engine that he wants to sell for $500. I think I can get him down to $300 as it hasn't sold in several months. He says it runs but is knocking. I would but it as a project and would also ppump it while I'm at it.
The knock worries me. What all could be toasted with that? I don't want a crapped up block mostly. Should I run away?

The cylinder can be bored oversize if that proves to be the issue
