There was an almost new diesel pickup parked at my neighbor’s house that was left idling for almost 2 hours. That just makes me cringe!

no, not really. the computers will take care of the engine. other will say they don't burn clean enough, i leave mine running for days at a time some times it idles for 8-10 hours, it'll auto idle up and down as it needs to.

Because you have been lucky so far doesn’t make it the right thing to do.The long term result is not good.The model year also makes a difference.The net zero idle is only to reduce the risk of creating too much soot too fast.
