Within the past few months I received a postcard describing a class action lawsuit involving the clutch safety interlock switch installed on certain Chrysler 2006- 2007 model year vehicles with manual transmissions. I am surprised that I can't find any discussions of this on the TDR forum as it may pertain to 2006-2007 Dodge Rams. Does anyone else know anything about this? Also, I am surprised that the part manufacturer is being sued over their alleged faulty part instead of Chrysler. Seems convoluted to go after the part maker instead of the vehicle manufacturer. It seems like there should have just been a Chrysler recall to replace the faulty switch on affected trucks with manual transmissions. The suit is titled "Rickey Royal et al vs. Stoneridge, Inc.

I received a notice some time last year P80/NHTSA 14V-795 for my 06'. It reads in part "The clutch interlock switch on your truck may contain a return spring that fatigues". Mine has! I can start the truck without depress the clutch!!!I also have 16v-352 passenger air bag inflator, 15V-313 driver bag """""" and 13V- 528 steering linkage left tie rod ball may fracture. I had my 03's bags completed last year. Will get the 06' down to the dealer as soon as this quite down around here! A lot of late season plowing and now a lot of tree damage work getting completed, just can't have this truck tied up in a dealership right now!

$375,000 for the attorneys and $5,000 each for the three "plaintiffs" is what it boils down to.

How did we ever survive older vehicles which didn't have all the nannies to protect us from ourselves?

The nannie-state in which we live is getting worse. England has even more govt overreach problems. It won't stop as long as there are sue happy people out there looking for a quick buck and liberal attorneys and judges that will allow it through the system.

My clutch switch was defeated a few weeks after I bought the truck. Drove 30 years with UPS and NONE of those trucks had such a switch. I don't like the fact of a 3500 pound pressure plate pushing against a dry engine thrust bearing while starting. Unless on a hill, I park my truck in neutral and set the brake. I ALWAYS check that I am in neutral before turning the key. I always start with the clutch OUT.

Just for discussion, that generic 3500 pound pressure plate the release load force applied by the bearing is off the top of me noggin is less than 500 lbs and more like 450.

But you are correct, a force is applied to the thrust bearing.

I didn't know exactly what force it takes to release. same thing when people sit at a stop light sitting on the clutch and in gear waiting. I've seen engines that had standard transmissions behind them where people sat on the clutch all the time and the engines had enormous amounts of crankshaft end play, some so much that the front crank balancer rubbed the back side of the water pump pulley when the clutch was put in. This was on a Ford 200ci, 6 cyl and I saw it on an old 220S Mercedes engine.

Trying to understand this. This is because of mechanical advantage of "fingers" of diaphragm which pivot on a fulcrum which must then be located about 1/7 ( 500:3500lbs ) the radius of the diaphragm from the outside ?
