While towing a 5th wheel,a friend saw oil had covered the front of his trailer. After stopping he realized it was dripping from the drivers side front area behind his ECM. We took off the ecm mounting bracket and out drops a shiny, small plug looking thing.
After further inspection we found a hole that we surmised was for a dip stick location for other application the engine can be used. When we tried to install the plug it dropped in flush with the block and could see remnants of black silicone.
To repair it we set the plug on a metal surface and tapped it with a hammer to enlarge the diameter. After 3 or 4 tries we got it to sit about an 3/16” out of the hole and with a long extension and the correct silicone drove it in flush from above. We then let it setup for a few hours.
He had lost about 1 gallon of motor oil but had good oil pressure while driving. After topping of the oil we then started the engine and no more leak. Or course his 2010 6.7 had just hit the 103,000 miles and out of warranty and all this took place out in the desert where we camp with limited phone service.
Just a guess but we believe it was caused by a restricted crank case breather filter and very lucky the plug had remained behind the ecm bracket.
