I'm surprised they didn't develop a track system for those rigs given the terrain . The stack through the hood would have driven me nuts LOL.
Notice the Manitowoc All terrain lattice boom in the opening minutes loading up supplies. They didn't change much in the early years, the first company I worked for hanging iron had a handful of mid to late 60's era 3000 crawlers. The only difference between the All Terrain and crawlers was the lower chassis, one had road tires and outriggers and one had tracks. Upper works were otherwise identical. I got my feet wet pulling levers on those rigs. Where an oiler did more than cleaning windows! Scariest part on those rigs was the mechanical winch brake. A slip of the foot and whatever was on the hook was free falling - wether 1 ton or 50. Seen a 50 tonner with 150 ft of main boom and less than 10k on the hook freefall about 30 ft before the operator panicked and stabbed the brake (number one NO NO) and pulled the crane right over.
Today's cranes are almost idiot proof.
