So, I had the tailgate and trans solenoid recalls done at the local dealer.

Got home and the trans is overfull. I removed about 2 qts to get to the top of the hot marks - really need to remove a little more since the trans temp was about 165. How frustrating! Can't they do something simple. Makes me wonder if they stripped out any of the trans pan screws or the valve body screws.

Sigh....

And folks wonder why I hate going to the dealer for work to be done. I really wish folks took pride in their work! I understand that warranty work typically pays squat, so part of the blame is on FCA, but.....really!?!

So, how do you remove extra fluid when there isn't a drain plug?!? - I created a Rube Goldberg invention. Use the A/C vacuum pump, attach to a old Mayo jar with 2 tire valve stems in the lid - one vlave stem has a small brass tube added to help prevent fluid going easily into the other one that the vacuum is attached to. Run a vinyl tube into the dip stick tube, attach to the mayo jar. Attach another vinyl tube from the mayo jar to the vacuum pump. And then remove 2 qts of transmission fluid.

I would have rather been in my reloading room getting ready for the 2-gun match this weekend!

Don't knock the dealer too hard Having done my transmission service many times it very hard to hit the full mark target. Fluid tends to lay in the dipstick tube and it screws up the reading. This year when I drained the fluid I was carful to collect every drop and replace exactly what I took out. All looked good when I finished was at the full when cold mark. However the next morning at start up the fluid wasn't up to the add mark when cold. I add 1 qt and now after I've let it sit over night it's showing over filled by 1/2". I've found this Rfe68 to be a real pain to get the level right.

I have run every (My) transmission engine over full for decades, My gas engines I run 24-32oz OF , My Aisin's 1QT OF, My 70HP80s 24oz OF , My 6.7s 1 QT OF , My 47/48 24oz OF. 68RFEs/545s ,42re. You name all OF.

The warnings are for the fools that think they can grossly over fill, 2QTs is waaaaaay to much, but its doubtful any bad results for running it overfull at that amount for some time.

When I did service work years Back we fill to line on Stick regardless of what the book/CD stated.

True - it can be a pain - but 2 quarts - no excuse in my book. If my calculations are correct that is over 11% overfull.

I've rebuilt transmissions and serviced hundreds of them. The new ones - like Toyota - that don't have a dipstick are the biggest pain. Need a scan tool to monitor temp to verify fluid level.

Transmission fluid has a specific coefficient of expansion, which is why they give you the temp the transmission needs to be at to check fluid level.

Not worried about damage to the transmission as much as if they can't fill the transmission correctly, what else can't they do correctly?

Have your trans at operating temp when changing fluid. Check level before draining. Measure the volume drained including what’s in the filter/filters. Add that volume and wala you will be full once again.
