Just this past Wednesday, I ran into an issue regarding excessive regeneration with the ol’ 4500 on a trip to Salisbury, NC.

I had another run to Knox, IN Thursday and called Ken at Tom O’Brien RAM in Indianapolis, IN on Friday.

He has a great tech there named Matt. He worked hard on trying to get another truck finished up Friday to begin diagnosing mine, but he ran into an issue that kept him on the other truck through quitting time.

I spent another night in Indy, and he got started on it first thing Saturday morning. The only CEL thrown was P2459....dpf regeneration frequency high. Upon diagnosing some things, it appears I have a compressor outlet temperature high issue. It was reading 205*F after sitting in the shop all night at ambient temps of about 60*F......all others sensors were reading current ambient temperatures. The EGR valve was dirty and it was cleaned.

A call into STAR pointed Matt to check a couple of other things. After those checked out fine, it was escalated to someone at Cummins.

Hopefully I’ll have more info later today.

Did the tech in his infinite wisdom Place the truck into stationary de-sooting ,and check all the sensor reading form plenum to DPF, is the truck up to date on all modules, Its not unusual for sensors to read incorrectly until operated in open mode.

Did you Dia-electric all the connection? Many members / owners may chime in after spenting 3 hrs in My driveway watching how things work go Home and Dia-electric connections and all their CEL and DPF woe's have disappeared.

might want to get a DPF cleaning kit. I had deleted my 09 4500 and DPF sat for 8 years. I put all the emission back on and all was good except DPF probably needed regen prior to removing. After putting back on, EGTs were 200' higher. Ran it 80 mph 70 miles down I-10 and 70 back with no joy. Bought a German DPF cleaning kit and gave it two doses into the front air pressure sensor while running and fixed. Friend had loaded up Ford that regen wouldn't clean, so treated his too and fixed his.

If interested, I'll get info out of my shop and post it. The company has good reviews and there was a YouTube of a Volvo dealer using it to fix a clogged Volvo. pretty cool technology.

Cheers, Ron

Ash builds in the DPF Chamber and either need to be removed and cleaned, Treated as Wiredawg did or it will need Stationary De-sooting by Someone that knows the work around.
Its hard to say at this point what's up with Ol 4500.

Well.....Matt checked another truck, also that had been sitting overnight, and it read ambient air temperature on all sensors.

I really think he is on to something. In any event......Cummins just got back with Matt, and their suggestion includes replacing the TMAP sensor, part number 68282012AA.

Two of three dealerships I’ve called don’t have it. The third dealer is too busy in parts to answer right now....

That Sensor has be related to (Service electronic throttle Valve) and DPF messages.... like 100% full.

Also if that sensor or any malfunctioning sensor Needed to do the Stationary de-soot would trigger default on the 1st screen... I find it odd the tech did not perform this to eliminate the Sensor guessing.

I hear ya.......but the only DTC was P2459.......

Pretty positive this is aimed at me!! The stationary desoot and dia-electric greasing of all my connections has eliminated all the constant problems I had for a few years that multiple dealers could not figure out.
Much thanks and appreciation Todd for the help you’ve given me!!

Tramplineman, You and many others put forth the effort to fix the problems associated with poor connections. We are talking microseconds when it comes to communications, interrupt that signal for even 1000s of a second will throw codes.

And Todd......I actually will be in the St Paul, MN area on Wednesday.....maybe I should come on up.

Blaine, MN doesn’t seem to be far away!

You can, I will be siding My House Wed-Friday, My guys can Handle it Thou, they Kick Me of The Job regularly :)....I have a shipment From Magnum Machining (Blaine Shop) on Wed also, I'm sure we can work things out, My House is in Blaine Also About 30 Miles NW of St.Paul. The Network for WITECH 2.0 is secure and approved Here also, You will need to be with the truck During the process to watch the Gauges, it takes 4-8 Gallons of Diesel and 2-4 hrs. You can change several Setting yourself if you like, Ramp Idle , Shutdown timer and I think several thresholds (CC) if you place the truck to rest of world ,than return it to USA.

I received a phone call from Tom O’Brien RAM in Indianapolis on Wednesday.

It seems as if both FCA and Cummins are in agreement to change out the TMAP sensor.

I stopped by the dealership on Thursday, May 17th, for the new TMAP sensor.

After running a few more diagnostic and monitor checks prior to changing the sensor, as well as after changing the sensor, the TMAP sensor was confirmed bad.

Looks like I’m good to go! Fuel economy seems to have improved slightly, and the throttle response is a little better.

Hats off to Ken and Matt at Tom O’Brien RAM in Indianapolis.

Congrats, and good info to know. You run a much higher duty cycle on your truck than I do, so it's a benefit to learn from your efforts

Thanks for sharing,
