Read today about another FCA recall involving 2019-20 RAMs. The backup camera stays on for 10 seconds after shifting out of reverse. Apparently, this can cause a distraction to the driver and cause a wreck.

I noticed, on my 2015, that the backup camera started to stay on after shifting out of reverse, for about 10 seconds, several months ago. Didn't pay that much attention because I figured it was just another random software glitch. Now I'm thinking that maybe it was caused by a software update.

Anyone else have this problem?

I actually like the delay on my 2017 Ram 5500... when aligning to trailer, I put it in drive and fine tune my forward motion for hitching. I also like touching the icon while driving forward to see hitch. Interesting, I guess folks can't take their eyes off the monitor while driving.

EDIT: No stats I know of, but I'll bet the bad UH OH hitching moments happen in the first 10 seconds, most sooner.

Well, sort of. On numerous occasions mine would spontaneously select the front camera. In many, but not all, instances it occurred when shifting out of reverse, and instead of the reverse camera going away it would jump to the front camera, but when it happens it will stay on indefinitely, until the next restart.

On these trucks, there's lots to get distracted on...EVIC with all the trucks vitals on display, the entertainment system, the climate controls, the aux switches, hands free calling, trailer tow controller. I hope the fix isn't to do an OTA to eliminate the camera delay, it's only 10 seconds.

The 8.4 NAV in my 2017 and the 12.0 on my 2019 both do this and seems like it was an update that added the delay. I'm not distracted by one more than the other. Just like I see how people can have information overload when backing in a parking lot and not being too focused on one view, backup camera (and 360' camera) side cameras, review mirror, side view mirrors, looking over your shoulder. There's a lot to choose from. I tend to use the mirrors and straight sight, the cameras get the least of my attention, except when backing to hitch trailer. The 360' camera on the 2019 IS pretty cool backing into a tight parking place though, and the side view cameras coupled with anti collision when backing out of a parking space and someone is driving 35MPH. Very cool feature.

Interesting to follow this and see how it plays out.

Cheers,

I really like the delay too.

I call BS on it being more distracting that anything else. If we're not careful with blaming inattentiveness on the dash the whole truck will be recalled and our dash will all of a sudden look like a Model T.

Cheers,

I use the back up camera a lot, at my age my neck has gotten a little stiff and it is hard to turn my head. I also have a 4.3 display on the center console with a camera that looks down from the RAM emblem in the grill at the front bumper and a second one that use to be on the back on the front box and looked at the 5th wheel hitch. That was replaced with a camera on top of the rear license plate that show the height of the TT hitch compared to the ball.

I like to back into parking spots, so the OEM back up camera is great for that.

I like the delay there really is no problem with distractions as I have to watch what I am towing, some drivers ride the dam dots on the road and get really close to my boat it's just a boat I have no idea what there looking at? I like the idea of bed camera, and camera up top looking back.

It would be nice if you select the cargo camera in R, the go to D, and back to R with the camera still on that it would stay on the cargo camera instead of going back to the tailgate camera. If I’m using the cargo camera to align for a trailer the tailgate is open and it’s camera is useless.

We had a backup camera on our near new Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited rental in Florida. It worked incredibly well. The lane assist worked well too. I poo poo'd these features but changed my tune after experiencing them. The stop start nonsense not so much. There would be a slight delay when taking off from an extended stop where the engine had shutdown.

I do hate my backup camera being in the rear view mirror!!!!!!!!!

If i were to have known at the time when ordering I would have skipped the bed camera, IMHO it's a complete waste of $$$. By doing so the backup would have been in the 8.4. Of course 2016 they fixed their GIANT F-UP.

I think that's the only real regret.

Ron, you should check to see if you can swap the video leads... might not be too hard.

Cheers, Ron

I am not an electronics guy but I do know there is nothing that can be done from research. There is a company that has a way to do this but NO WAY while i am under warranty.

On my 14 I installed my own backup camera and wired it to the radio instead of purchasing the new rear view mirror. It's been a few years but as I recall it was just sending the camera input to the radio.
