What TF said, plus just the right amount of starting aid- provided there are no glow plugs or heaters- that should kick right over. Of course it helps to warm the oil too.

Big,
Does it have the over/under hydraul shift? My 1555 just has direct/under. When it’s in under, it will freewheel when not under power. I’m not sure if yours is the same, but you may want to check it out so you don’t get any surprises. I found out when backing mine off my trailer the first time. Loaded in first gear under. Crawled right up. Figured I’d do the same coming off. Mistake! Had a runaway. First direct at idle and it comes off slowly.

Found another 12v battery in what I thought was a tool/step box mounted on the frame. The guy that lent me the plow (Who's family are REAL FARMERS) has an uncle who's a mobile mechanic said its a non-factory conversion, for a time 6v batteries were hard to come by. He suggested to return to the 4 6v batteries it won't burn the 12 v starter up as easy. He's making up the cabling to go back to what he feels is better, now that 6 v batts have become better & plentiful than they were when this Beast was built. I still cant get over the power it has with the over/under hydraul shift you were talking about that I figured has 18 forward & 6 reverse gears??? have a service book ordered to help me figure this out.

Big,
Is the shift pattern like this? This is what my 1555 has. It has a direct range and low range selector that pulls out and pushes in. I think yours might have low, direct, and high. Low has an overrunning clutch and that’s the one that will freewheel. So, yes you should have 18 forward and 6 reverse. Mine is 12 and 4.

Bud my stickers showing the sift pattern are gone or are unreadable so this is off the top of my head as to the difference in patterns between your & mine

where your 1/5 mine is 3/5
your 3/6 mine is 1/2
your R2/4 is my R1/4
your R1/2 is my R2/6

on the right side of the steering column is a lever with Direct in the center over is up and low is down

The Over/direct/under can be selected ON THE FLY!! which I think is fantastic pulling the plow there were a few hills not knowing the power of the tractor before going up hill it can be dropped from over into direct or under (which I really can't fathom ever using unless it was trying to pull a battleship)

Theres two Neutrals 1 Between the upper & lower gear selections I don't know if there is anything in the center N position of your pic's thats missing on my shift pattern sticker. I was told this transmission is better because it does have the ability to be pull started???? NOT BY ANYTHING I HAVE TO DO THE PULLING

Yes, two neutrals - one in each H pattern. When going from the top H pattern to the bottom H pattern, it feels like it engages a different gear set. Never had it apart, so don't know for sure. I do have the service manual, but haven't looked too much at that part. I'll go over to the shop and take a look.

This is way more tractor than I'll ever need on the Hobby Farm/ Alfalfa growing endeavor but the cab with A/C, Heat Tilt/telescoping steering wheel is a tractor that I don't feel like the Bear at the Russian Circus riding the motorcycle IT FITS!!!

My shop manual only covers 1550-1655. But, I think perhaps the 1655 has the same hydraul shift as yours. Well, crap! I’m trying to do this with my phone. Hopefully, these pics will open.

Both those passages sound like they apply to my trans. What's the name of the manual you got this from?

I think where they get the 18 gears forward on mine is the lever on the right that has over, direct, under. While in 1 of the 6 speeds in the main box (for lack of better words) either one of the three over, direct, under can be selected on the fly TO ME THATS AN AWESOME IDEA

Especially with the torque of the diesel pulling that plow. Find a gear that it would do the task in Direct and go about doing it if needed or desired an automatic type shift to over OR under out of direct is all thats needed.

I also got this. It says White Farm Equipment Company on the back. The tractor says White Motors on the tag, but Oliver on the hood. I’m not sure when White bought Oliver. Seems like someone posted a place to get technical manuals for this older equipment, but I can’t find that now.

@BIGNASTY The 12V or 6V debate is about a couple things:

1) How much plate material can be put in each cell. For example a 6V battery that is the same physical size as a 12V battery has cells that are 2x the size of the 12V battery. Makes a difference in deep cycle use for longer life on 6V battries. Ratings, CCA, and reserve are different of course. 6V Deep cycle batteries have thicker plates (vs. 12V) where this really shows up in life expectancy.

2) Balance. 12V dual battery setups need special attention so the cable lengths are the same. With the amps involved the cable length drops voltage and thus total AMPS. Different length cables have different voltage drops thus less amps out of the longer cable length battery: One battery effectively works harder starting than the other battery and charges differently. Then they equalize: discharge/recharge each other when the engine is "off". Bad (or low charge) battery drains the good one so the good one is now not at full charge and dies of sulfation. 2 6V batteries do not have this balance problem from cable length. Voltage differences in the 0.X to 0.0X range make a big difference in charging speed on a battery esp. during the slow top off charging stage.

Four 6V batteries means you have to again match cable lengths between the two 12V banks of two 6V batteries.

Looks like a predecessor to the White 2-135 my dad had for a while when we were still farming. That old beast would pull, never gave us any problems for years. The one thing to keep in mind is don't use under or over if coming down much a hill when road driving it, use direct otherwise it will freewheel. Found this out accidentally one day, forgot to shift it into direct before starting downhill after a car wanted to play chicken. Great machines for their time, still a lot working on farms to this day.
