It was incredible! I've disagreed with a lot of things Elon has said and done over the years but there is no denying his forward thinking. What an accomplishment. Proud to see such a display of American talent.

When we visited the Kennedy Space center we got to see one of the rocket transports moving, it was really large. Also in the museum we saw the moon rover or copy there of, and it was based on the same drive/chassis as our old 1976 HD 4 wheel 36V golf cart.

I can remember like it was yesterday when we were glued to the TV when the first Shuttle launches took place. It was great to see my kids interested in this launch. In their lifetime, they haven't been able to experience the same excitement coming from NASA that we did.

That’s an excellent point. Not much for today’s kids to look forward to and be inspired.

I went through the museum in the late 90's, they had Columbia there on display. We weren't allowed in it but could walk all around it. I watched in sadness on tv as it broke up on re entry in 2003.
Then in 2008 I was in Orlando for my NCCO license and had the opportunity to drive down one night and watch a rocket launch. If I remember correctly it had a satellite on board and was probably 1/3 of the size of the rocket that launched yesterday but that is something that will forever stay with me. The power witnessed that literally turned night into day was incredible.
So glad to see this program back and better than ever!

I have mixed feelings although I am very happy it wasn't a foreign country doing this. Since I grew up from the start of going to space I watched it grow from a one man capsule to a condo with an articulating arm and so forth. Now we went backwards to a 2 man capsule. I guess maybe we have to restart somewhere. The built in emergency procedures are very cool. I would think it would be a very long ride if they plan on going to Mars in a 2 man capsule but by then maybe they will have something like the shuttle. Pinpoint landing in the ocean was a nice feature and definately required some technology there. I wonder where the shuttle program would be today if it wasn't shut down.
 
What was really cool was growing up in the 60s going through the Gemini where space walks and space docking with Agena were pioneered and refined, and Apollo program that got us on the moon.

Newscasters like Walter Cronkite, Frank McGee, David Brinkley all made the excitement and education of US spaceflights from our living rooms on front of our TVs.

The space program brought a lot to the world beyond space accomplishments.... new technology benefitted all of us. High tech was a Haulmark of the US and we need it back with primary use of US manufacturing.

Not bad for just one cup of coffee.

We were in Fl for the STS-4 launch in June of 1982. I actually don't remember much about the launch itself. If I remember correctly we weren't at the space center that day but watching from the side of the road somewhere. We did however go to tour the facility a day or two before the launch.

It is funny what your mind does remember however over time. We had a 1981 Chevy Chevette as our rental car. It had a tire that would leak and I can remember my father taking us to McDonalds for breakfast and then stopping at a gas station to get air in the front tire before we drove out. The car was light blue.

MARS trip is pretty long for the human body in space. We can get there, the return is a completely different issue. The distance between Mars and Earth varies a lot at any given time. Having the fuel to do it will be very complex with the current ones available. We need to talk to some aliens to learn more about that kind of travel.
