Brothers, Been a while since I have posted here....
NV5600 when it gets hot while towing a load for 8 hours straight at highway speed it is difficult to downshift and hard to get into 1st gear on take off.
What should I be checking first?

When I had mine, I ran factory fluid, had Fast Coolers, and had it overfilled. Never any problems in 198K miles.

How many miles on the fluid... mine would start acting like yours as reminder to change it.

What fluid you running and how often you change it. Fluid interesting topic, folks had different results with different fluids. OEM always worked for me.

Please keep us updated on what you do.

Cheers, Ron

Engine cold. Start engine, push clutch pedal to normal on the floor position. Select 1st gear. Now, slowly raise clutch pedal how far measure carefully how far does the pedal come up before the truck starts to move forward?

Then repeat with hot engine.

Real measured dimension if at all possible.

Others have pointed out very good questions, answers to those can help too.

Same distance from floor cold to hot. Although, I didn't run it down the highway for 8 hours with a load.

Gary, does a 2 gen have the plastic clevis pin like a 3 gen? Mine was worn past half way. I lost a lot of release because of that.

Wayne,

Had to look that one up to be specific.

2002 the clutch push rod has a solid bushing and clip retainer. Pretty stout connection system. 3rd Gen uses the spear hex pin that locks into the pedal, some flat-spotting has been reported by some. 3rd Gen with adjustable pedal option uses the dreaded claw/retainer.

134,000 total miles on stock 6 speed trans and stock clutch. Did Amsoil Trans flluid change at 98,000.

I would change the oil, that way you can examine it for level/quality. I would also change the t-case and check for level/quality. Our 2nd gens are getting old, good possibility of cross contamination of the transmission/t-case fluids.

It was 2 1/4"

That rules out a hydraulic release system problem.

When it acts up, try selecting other gears. If all are difficult, points to clutch. If gear specific points to transmission. At your mileage, pilot bearing becomes a concern especially if it works sometimes and sometimes not.

Drained fluid and took off PTO plate. Pulled magnet and wiped clean. There were a few metal shavings on it. Too small to see...could only feel them. Cleaned up some greyish sludge. So appears to be normal. I'll get case filled tomorrow and see how it shifts and report back.....

Fluid change is good advice for first-pass. The 2004 I used at work used this transmission. The truck towed a 10,000 lb trailer in a mix of highway and rough dirt road conditions. What fluids got put in were not my decision, so the OEM fluid was used. After a change, the transmission would shift as smoothly as a 5600 with OEM fluid ever could. (That's faint praise, I know.) As miles stacked up, shifting got tougher. Once it got really bad, it was time for another change. As said above, never more than 24,000 miles.

So overfilled case a bit and took for a ride. As it has been for a while reverse and 1st are a bit tricky when cold. Haven't taken it on a long run yet. Maybe this weekend.

Had truck out for a 44 mile run yesterday and shifting was good. Shifted smoother the more the trans warmed up.
Think the over filling helped alot.
