Oil leak

I have a massive oil leak coming from the left rear of the engine looks like it’s coming from above the tappet cover gasket whixh i just replaced when i did the injection pump. Any ideas

If it’s oil it has to be a valve cover or the tappet cover.

Ok . I’m guessing its the tappet cover since i just replaced it . I think my nephew got it to tight and broke the gasket . Goong to wash it off again and see if i can see where it’s coming from

Did you glue the gasket to the cover with a good quality cement? They will squirt out/off the cover if not. After applying the glue and gasket let it set for about an hour, then install the cover finger tight with a deep socket, just your hand on the bare socket....then let it set overnight before the final torque down.

I didn’t glue it on ill black rtv it on next time and ill put it on this tine

I clean the cover up good and use the yellow 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive to glue the gasket to the cover. The gasket has to be oriented properly, also. I let it sit overnight and install it the next day. Haven't had one leak yet.

I have read of people using 3M weatherstrip adhesive. Don't know if it makes a difference.

I know at one time it only came in yellow, maybe that is why. I do not know when the black came out and I have used it on different things and it appears to be the same to me, just a different color.

Yellow is listed as Weatherstrip and Gasket Adhesive, Neoprene Rubber, less than 4 minutes work time, cures in 24 hours.

Black is listed as Weatherstrip Adhesive, Rubber, 1-5 minutes work time, no cure time listed.

Sounds like yellow is it. No sense messing with something not tried and proven.

Guys am I missing something here, or just lucky, I've had my stock valve cover gasket off and on at least 10 times over the years. Wipe it dry, clean mating surfaces, install and tighten the 5 bolts till they stop. ???

I believe the topic is about the tappet cover gasket on the left side of the engine block..., not the valve cover gasket.

There is another solution albeit a rather expensive one and one that in my opinion is a lot of money spent on something that will never be seen for the most part but it employs an o-ring seal that is captured in a machined groove in the tappet cover. Yes the injector pump needs to come off to install it, even with the head removed (although not impossible with the pump in place) to make access a LOT easier. I like these because they allow additional crank case venting or moving it towards the rear driver side of the engine on 24 valves. If you really want it to look good, send it out for powder coat. Pretty cool yet TOTALLY non-essential.

yessir and to make it even better just had the injection pump off and repkqced the gasket and vp44 i didn’t know it needed glued on but ill glue it this time you can count on that
