  • Hey Doug,

The mileage put on the VP is a better indicator than months. I have had VP's last longer than 10,000 miles once symptoms were present, don't remember how many miles past that. As long as you can tolerate the symptoms without pulling all your hair out then keep driving it. If you want peace of mind, replace it. The VP, not your mind!

Swapping the VP is not that bad of a process. Print out some instructions and perhaps have the videos accessible while doing it. The best special tools to have are the pump gear puller and the MM socket to fit the pump gear nut. A barring tool is also helpful. Just take your time. Go for it!

    Godspeed,

Hi Trent --This problem started about 18 months and 10,000 miles ago when I added a AFE Stage 1 BHAF, would a bad VP44 limp along that long? Also, how big of a job is replacing those things? I am your average shade tree mechanic and I looked at the You Tube clips for this job. It doesn't seem too difficult, it looks like the most critical thing is getting the keyway lined up. But I'm sure those bolts & clips and all don't come out and go back as easy as it looks. Thanks, again -- Doug
