My 4x4 smelled like hot oil at about 96K. It turned out to be that the dust cover on the front drive shaft had shredded. It through grease on the exhaust.

While changing oil last week I noticed that the rubber boot on my front drive shaft is tattered / shredded. Is this an item for the dealer or is it an easy fix? i. e. - drop one end of the shaft - pull the shaft apart - slide on new boot - reassemble. What should I use to relube with?
