Service costs are what they are; there are options out there much less than OEM that work similarly. DIY isn't too hard and transmission shops can do them much 'cheaper' than dealers, for what it's worth.

Our '95 (see signature) was doing that a couple years ago, had some gunk in the fuel return check valve at the filter housing. Cleaned it up and it's been fine ever since.
We have been seeing more and more of this on our crummys and other fleet rigs, along with many other weird electrical gremlins, as indicative of a TIPM failure.

Anything that will overfuel it will blow a ton of smoke. Wasted power, wasted money, and the local Karen chapter will probably follow you home to eat your face off but I'm not an expert on Canadian law.
