Update. Injectors changed yesterday, switched to DDP Stage II 75 hp. Mechanic was very impressed with them, said it appeared there was alot of work and precision put into them, that they were honed very well and they finely atomized the fuel. Got the truck back, and it seems that noise is not...
Nope. Its the craziest thing. Some days it seems like its gone, others its as loud as before, sometimes seems louder when I stand on the left side of the engine, others when I stand on the right side. I think it is either something in the injection pump making noise or close to the injection...
It would be nice if my noise was as easy to get rid of as yours was Matt! I have tried buying fuel at different locations, 3 different additives, adding more additive than is minimally recommended, etc, no improvement! I think mine is down to either bad injector or piston. I know this could be...
The one thing I am certain it is NOT, on my truck anyway, is the lift pump simply because I don't have it anymore and instead have a FASS! Guess the only thing I can do is wait and see if it gets worse or save some $ for different injectors to see if that makes a difference.
Dang I am sorry to hear about all that! Are you going to do a stock rebuild using oem parts or replace with parts for more power? Any idea a ballpark of what it will cost you? At this point I don't really know what to think about the noise mine is making. I think its either a bad injector...
Lonestar, sorry to hear about what happened to you while on your trip! When you say your truck went to crap, what exactly did it do? Was it so bad that you couldn't drive it home? Did it start to leak oil or some other fluid that it hadn't been leaking before? Did it lose power, the noise get...
1tuffram, I am also beginning to think that it is possibly an injector issue. I have been trying to remember if my truck made this noise before I had some aftermarket injectors installed. I don't know the make of the ones that where put on, but I am pretty sure I didn't hear the noise before...
Lonestar, please let us know what you find out when you pull the head. If it is a hurt piston, and I would imagine this would be worst case scenario, anyone have any idea how much it would cost to have the problem piston replaced? Would the fix stop there or would other parts/components need to...
Have you been able to get the truck started again or is it just dead now and wont start? IF it wont start again I would say probably the factory lift pump. I have an early 98 as well that I purchased with 144k back in 2006. About a year ago with around approximately 180k I started it and drove...
1tuffram, unfortunately I have not located the noise yet, although it seems to have quieted a little bit. A very little bit. Good news is it seems that we are indeed describing the same noise, mine is also more prominent when the engine is cold, though it seems to never quite go away even after...
200,000 miles. No mechanical lift pump, it died around 15,000 miles ago and replaced with FASS mounted on frame near fuel tank. When I did have the mechanical lift pump it made the tapping sound, this is different. Sounds like its coming from the top of the engine or close to it.
98 12v auto around 200k. 4" exhaust, FASS adj pump 90gph, injectors. During acceleration after the engine is warmed up there is a very noticable clackity sound that slows and speeds up with engine rpm. I know its a diesel and they make noise but this is higher in pitch than the low end, grunty...
