    5th gear lost teeth I hope to repair 5th myself to get the truck 2000 miles in a few weeks. I will pull the trans then and go through it with some help. I have the tail shaft housing off and have access to the mainshaft and 5th gear. I remember a bearing problem last time this happened.

    What was the outcome and whom/how did you fix fifth? I have just had the same problem again after 40k miles on my '96 3500 2x4.

    Just had the same thing happen to a '96 3500 2x4. This is the second time around at 230k, for a bad 5th, not a loose nut (behind the wheel). The last rebuild consisted of replacing the upgraded main shaft with full splines, and fifth gear. 40k later, 3 teeth missing on fifth. The upgraded nut...
