OH ya you can hear it, like marbles bouncing around in a tin can, RDyson has it right, it's the turbine wheel, so it doesn't go through the motor, just goes out the exhaust side.

I have experienced the same on my 06 although no engine light. I read there is a bulletin for unusually long crank times and involves a reflash of the computer by the dealer. I believe the tsb is listed on this site.
Lost power towing on freeway pulling 12K LB toybox, limped on shoulder at 10mph with something like a door chime going off until all it would do is idle, then it quit altogether. No CEL or idiot lights. All gauges indicated ok. Had it towed home, then started it up and seems to run fine now...
