Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Are bypass oil filters really worth having?

I'm not understanding the economics here. According to www.eia.gov the highest heating oil in the nation is $4.16 today. You buy engine oil for $4.16?

The oil was fine but you changed it anyway. SMH. I can envision $40 for three gallons of oil but a quality filter too? Have you sever taken the time to read this? TDR71_LubeOilFiltration.pdf

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Are bypass oil filters really worth having?

I change the oil in my Hemi/Ram when the light comes on (10,000 miles) AND I send in a UOA. Oil analysis is the only way to know what is going on inside the engine. It isn't about cheap, it's about monitoring. Extended drains is something almost all of us have been programmed to be scared of...

How often were you changing the oil? Sadly there isn't any filter that I'm aware of that can take out soot, but it doesn't harm anything.

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 21 gallons at 59.52 a gallon

There is always a qt of oil left in a 12 valve engine when it's oil is drained. The IP doesn't drain so that oil is mixed with the new oil as soon as the engine is started. Now that you have had an analysis perhaps you won't be draining good, serviceable oil out in the future. I didn't get...

Why should I remember that? I don't care where they are made.

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Are bypass oil filters really worth having?

Bypass systems are beneficial if you do extended drains like I do. OTR trucks with them are doing 25,000 mile filter changes, oil analysis and drains of 100,000 miles or more. The oil is only drained if the analysis is bad. I extended past 30,000 once to 43,000 and soot exceeded .1% for the...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 21 gallons at 59.52 a gallon

Not when you do 15,000 mile filter changes and 30,000 mile oil drains.

Thanks for the info. I just bought some Fleetguard LF9028 filters for $45 each which is a travesty. They used to be $24 and I remember Mopar filters at Wal-Mart for $5. That wasn't too long ago either. I see now their price is $14.

Need Advice: Towing I-70 westbound out of Denver

Yes, I have a toolbox full of tools and a cache of spare parts in my RV. Starter, alternator, fuel pump, clutch linkage and more. They were packed before my last trip to Alaska and I see no reason to not carry them all the time. How many driveshafts fall off in ratio to transmission failures...

Need Advice: Towing I-70 westbound out of Denver

I'm retired too and know first hand the difference in cost in getting a transmission repaired at home, at my leisure, and breaking down far from home. My 1st gen that had an automatic had a transmission failure about 40 miles west of Rock Springs, WY while pulling an RV. No cell service so I...

Need Advice: Towing I-70 westbound out of Denver

If I had an automatic I would be proactive and get a few upgrades. I think that compared to a breakdown far from home it would be pocket change. I never leave home without my exhaust brake.

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Convert Vacuum Boost to Hydro Boost?

Quite a few guys on the Cummins Forum have. All the reports were positive.

    2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Front hubs

Technically they are rotor and hubs, but it's easier to just type hubs.

The hubs and rotors are one piece. Dang heavy too.
