Its kind of a complex job for a first timer. Your best bet is to make friends with a local TDR member with a timing set, and offer to buy him a couple six packs to come show you how to set the timing. :-laf

I ran 15w40 Mobil Delvac in my 12 valve in all weathers. Never had a problem with it as low as -5* unpluged starts. It always seemed to turn over fine and get oil pressure fairly quickly.

From what I've heard, Cams are the same, the stuff in the AFC is different though. The motors are the same too. Maybe the reason he's beating you is because you have one more gear to row through?
