2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Time for control arms

I put Hell Bent arms on my 97, to replace well-worn stock bushings (420k miles) and kick the axle forward a bit to clear 285's with chains (don't ask why I feel like I need that clearance), and so the truck would hold an alignment. The install was a total breeze, the "un-install" was a total...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Throttle cable (Part Number 4897407AA ) on back order...

Yesterday the throttle cable decided it was going to let me know it was frayed. Friday night, dealership closed, and the throttle cable kit is not available in parts outlets. Grrr, another one of those little things that show up after 400K miles. I decided to try an interim fix while a cable...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) starter bolts

I stripped out a starter bolt hole, and the easy fix was to "stud" it by putting in a longer, fully threaded bolt into the hole with a nut on it, then tightening the nut down onto the starter flange. Still there, 80k miles later. Seems like there was quite a bit of thread down deeper than the...

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission All ball joints gone again......

I have 140k on Moogs, still tight. I think it helps to grease them often, and to grease them with the tire jacked off the ground.

You have the cruise control set? [Just kidding]

    Sierra Nevada Crossings

I took 88 on Monday night when I-80 was a standstill, yeah 88 was a little hairy, but there was no one out on the road, and I did 20-35 mph the whole way. Took I-80 coming back to Reno Thursday, what a mess! Idiots everywhere doing either 50 mph or 10 mph, trucks spinning out, all that...

    What every shop "needs"

A wall of fame/shame, with all the broken drivetrain parts hanging on display. I might need to add another wall

    Dumb Question

I'd heard that the element can get damaged by cavitation from the water pump, I always have unplugged first. But, after reading this, maybe it doesn't matter. The habit of unplugging first has a benefit that you'll never drive off with the cord

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Shaking Boost Guage? Should I bee looking for a probelm?

My Autometer Cobalt boost guage started doing the same thing. I was worried about it, thought my turbo was going out or something, but it was running fine. The guage jiggles a little when going over bumps at higher boosts, so I think it's just the guage. Been doing it for about 30K miles, so I'm...

800 punds of torque coming soon!

I wouldn't mind a really tall rear end, and a direct drive top gear in the trans. Then for the majority of the miles the power would be going straight through. And the taller axle gears are inherently stronger, larger pinion gear. Makes too much sense though, it'll never get engineered into our...

800 punds of torque coming soon!

Right. I guess I was one unit off. Was trying to say that you can have all the torque you want, it's the hp that is doing the work. A 200 lb man hanging on a 4 foot long wrench on a bolt that won't turn is 800 ft lbs of torque going on. But zero horsepower: 800 ft-lbs x 0 rpm / 5252 = 0...

800 punds of torque coming soon!

Ft-lbs is a force unit. HP is a work unit. Pulling the load up the mountain is work. So, the more HP, the faster it will pull the hill. So, in theory and according to physics, the 400 hp trucks will pull the hill faster than the 350 hp truck. While the torquey Cummins really pounds on the...

    2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Steering linkage

I put the Borg box on my truck, and it worked with the DSS. Maybe it was BD brand, but anyways the bolt holes were elongate so I just had to slide the steering stabilizer over a little. It was a non issue, I was prepared to modify it, didn't have to. The Borg box is nice, tighter, but...

Dodge gets slammed in Diesel Power Mag!

For 55 G's those trucks better pull like that. I would like to see that test done on the hottest day of the summer. After the trucks have spent a month on a dusty jobsite or ranch. But, I guess the test was strictly to determine pulling ability, not all around capability. Diesel Power...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) T6 Rotella

I use it, hard to tell any differene between T6 and the older Rotella T synthetic. 350K and counting, runs good. Drop the oil every 6k miles

    Toyo or Nitto Tires

My friend had Nitto AT's on his 97 2500, wore out really fast, I don't think he got 25K out of them. Another buddy has Toyo AT's and they are holding up well, same size as yours. Not sure about his mileage. I do know that I have just over 31K on my Toyo MT's, have about 1/4" tread left, and...

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Lockright in front?

Thinking of upgrading my front axle to 35 spline, getting rid of the CAD. My idea is to get the 'shafts, and a Lockright locker. I have Lockrights in my old Ford, 60 rear 44 front, and the lockers work very well and have stood up to some pretty hard abuse. At least, the rear has. The front...

What is the best air filter oil?

K & N oil has worked fine for my AFE filter. K & N oil did not work with the K & N filter. Never use a K & N filter if you drive off road at all.

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) P-Pumps, Fuel and Mileage

There's a station here in Reno that still sells LSD, or at least it's labeled on the pump that it's "not ULSD, can't be run in 2007. 5 and newer vehicles". I fill there as often as possible, but I can't really tell if it's any better, fuel-mileage-wise, than ULSD I get from other places. The...

    2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Dlux fab?

Yeah I did notice that it gets a little closer to my plastic and the corner of the cab. I have 285's on 8" rims, Toyo MT's. I think I'll hafta put longer control arms in, which I've been planning on but didn't need to do yet. The alignment shop wouldn't align my truck due to worn out control...
