I have not looked at a 2012 but believe it is much like my 2011. It is readily accessible from below. If you want to fill it, have at it, I just let the pump fill it since it is right over your head or nearly so.

My 2011 took about 10K miles to show decent mileage, and it is not a DEF model. It does vary significantly, long trips are much better, anything less than 30 minutes is less than 15mpg, 2500 mile trip in a week overall average was 19.9 hand calculated (not loaded).

I go by the EVIC. Change it when the EVIC says an oil change is needed. The EVIC uses a complex algorithm to determine oil changes are needed, better than a human unless a long trip is anticipated and you do not want to change oil mid trip.
