    Engine temperatires

I tow a 7400-7800lb 24' enclosed trailer with my EcoD routinely. The temp gauge is smack dab middle at 224deg. Hottest I ever had it is 230deg which was a mid summer run at about 75-80mph for maybe 30min of mostly flat terrain pulling the trailer just to see how the truck would do under higher...

    32k mile update

Re. engine temp. Yes, that takes some getting used to. The coolant temp gauge is at dead center at about 224-225deg. I heard a rumor that the thermostat doesn't open completely until 228deg. Some guy in a different forum did some testing pulling a big load up a mountain pass at...

    32k mile update

I really love this truck. I was an early adopter having got my EcoD off of a lot in Apr14. It was intended to be primarily a tow vehicle for a 24' enclosed trailer, 7400-7800lbs. The daily driver back then was an semi-restored 80's classic that I tried to keep out of the rain, so the tow vehicle...

Ecodiesel towing test. Suspension sag, mpg, power, and cooling

No big deal. If someone was all excited about adding a little cooling capacity they should use a wetting agent. Those usually have anti-corrosives in them. This is all OBE (overcome by events) tho. This is an old thread. What was really going on with coolant temp is that the engine just runs...

    EcoD resale value

Ah so, that puts you in Atlanta. Savannah is ~5hrs away, depending on how fast a person drives. 80% of the population of GA is probably within commuting distance of Atlanta. Too many people for me. You will be near the world headquarters of Turbo Diesel Register tho. They are in N. Atlanta.

    EcoD resale value

Nitan, I'm surprised as heck to see you in my TDR thread. Lol, small world. Mingoglia, There might be fewer 4WD trucks in my neck of the woods. I'm in coastal GA. Never snows here and there's not much 4 wheeling as a hobby because once you get offroad here, it's all impassible swamp. I regret...

Is 10k oil change interval reasonable

My EcoD's life is probably a little more severe then usual. A lot of 10mi daily commutes and monthly tows of 7-16hrs roundtrip of a ~7500lb enclosed trailer. I sent an oil sample from my second oil change to Blackstone labs. The oil load had 10k miles on it and I wanted to know if I should...

    EcoD resale value

I bought a Laramie 2WD Crew about 14 months ago. It was to be a tow vehicle for a ~7600lb enclosed trailer. It has done that job really well. Best of all, the ride, handling and noise level is vastly better then the 2000 F-250 it replaced. I took a risk buying it. I wasn't sure how well the...

    Aux fuel tank install

The aux tank has now been in service for 19k miles and works fine. Other than the monthly road trips to distant race tracks, in DD mode, it's nice to be able to fuel up only once/month. I've started amusing myself by doing grocery shopping at Krogers on weekends for "double fuel points." By the...

15k mile update, all is well

I've really grown to like this truck. I've a history of lousy car decisions but maybe this one breaks the pattern. I like it so much that, unexpectedly, it's become my daily driver. Last weekend I drove the boys across the state for a soccer tournament. 6hrs, almost all freeway, pretty flat...

    The new ZF 8-Speed Auto

I really like the transmission in the ED. The software is cleverly done. I do a lot of towing with mine and I'm right at the rated capacity of the truck. The transmission is very good about being in the right gear. It's definately smarter then my various previous trucks.

    MPG reports

10k between DEF fills might be optimistic. If you get really low on DEF the truck is supposed to start warning you that it won't start after XXXX more miles. So once the DEF gauge gets into the red most folks will figure it's time to get some more DEF, vs. letting it go for another month. Sure...

    Def

Stumbled across DEF at Home Depot last weekend. About the same price as Walmart.

    Is it a proven engine?

The engine has a longer track record then the US specific engine management system. IMO all modern engine management systems are prone to failure because they are too complicated. Chasing CELs has aggravated the crap out of what fraction of American manhood? So I figure that it'll be the engine...

Aux fuel filter for the Ecodiesel?

I've had an Ecodiesel for 5-6 months now. I'ts my first experience with a "modern" diesel engine. I've been reading about folks growing concerned about the OEM fuel filters not adequately filtering out small particulates, say 2-5micron, which then blasts the high pressure injectors. These guys...

Ecodiesel towing test. Suspension sag, mpg, power, and cooling

I am very familiar with Waterwetter because it's commonly used in race cars. In the early months with my Ecodiesel I was worked up about coolant temps, but I'm over that. For a while I was considering reducing the fraction of anti-freeze from the normal 50% to ~25%, and adding some Waterwetter...

    Haul it or trailer it

Altho I'm a mechanical engineer, I don't know more about tires than any other consumer. My perception tho is that the idea is that a bit more air pressure means reduced sidewall stress. If you look at a heavily loaded tire you can see the how the sidewall flexes significantly near the tire's...

    Haul it or trailer it

Then I must be running them at 49-50psi when I tow. Thanks for fixing my #'s. It was the 5psi over that I'd focused on, not the base pressure. Re. stick with the sidewall pressures. We'll have to agree to disagree. Passenger tires have weak sidewalls. Giving them a little extra support is...

    MPG reports

I may have caused confusion. The F-250 is long gone. The trip above was with the Ecodiesel so 14.4mpg.
