    VP44

I had no choice on a trip to use Central Nebraska Diesel for a rebuilt VP44 and haven’t had any problems with it since then, a few years ago. Would have preferred to do more research and bought a highly recommended rebuilder, but broken down in NE, my mechanic back home said they appeared to...

Should I sell it, Wife says yes and I am undecided...

Hahaha. The “tricked out” trucks are what I’d like to avoid. A few reasonable upgrades here and there on your toys are fun, but some of the used stuff just gets ridiculous. :)

Should I sell it, Wife says yes and I am undecided...

When did the switch over happen to 24V? I have a 2001 3500 and it’s the “High Output” 24V. Was that a “late model year” change? In a similar dilemma here. Don’t have the large trailers I used to pull with it and it’s not my daily driver, but this one doesn’t even have rust having lived its...

Din and a Half or Double Din?

Local radio install shop. Mine charged me about $100 to do the install of a Kenwood double-DIN unit a few years ago, modify the dash via careful cutting, and it looks factory. Any good shop is quite familiar with the problem and has someone who can fabricate something that looks nice.

    Hot transmission.

With a headwind. And the transmission got hot. :)

    Looking for some advice.

This sounds nearly identical to my truck and what I’ve had done on the exact same model year. Have the manual trans so no changes needed other than larger Mag-Hytec covers with cooling fins and a trans temp probe just to know what’s going on. Also replaced a lot of worn out bushings in the...

Odd way to charge battery ?

The metal of that plug would be destroyed here by salt or mag chloride. Needs a cover.

    No 4X4 light on dash

    Lightbulb burnt out? ;-)

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) NV5600 overfill

Doesn't do any harm, might do some good.

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Need a all round tire for winter and summer ??

If you have the tools to swap them, grabbing another set of wheels and just having two sets of tires isn't a terrible option. Some places will swap them for free if you buy the tires from them, too, whenever you want. Just a thought. Two sets would last a very long time with your use case, and...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) exhaust brake hisses

I'll have to look closer and see what the heck is going on under my hood then. Haha. Seriously. Thanks. Seems like all the folks saying to bypass it would be causing a brake problem on the older ones. Not great advice while towing, that's for sure. Weak brakes and no exhaust brake. There's a...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) exhaust brake hisses

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the info out there. Numerous people say to simply bypass it if it fails. But is that pump stock and used for other things on the truck? (I'll be honest, I've never looked, but is it plumbed to the brakes or something else? I can't see a use for a stock vacuum pump on...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) exhaust brake hisses

Are you thinking third gen? Second gen Jacobs that was the Cummins-approved setup (didn't void Cummins warranty - available at any Cummins shop as an add-on for the trucks in that 98-02 year range) was definitely engine belt vacuum pump driven. BD and PacBrake made air compressor driven models...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) exhaust brake hisses

If you dig through the back issues of TDR you'll find some old articles comparing available exhaust brake systems on the older trucks. The Achilles heel of the Jacobs is that it requires a vacuum pump and line leaks or even failure of the pump is a pain. Many carry a shorter fan belt that...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) exhaust brake hisses

Usually they were installed with an activation switch. Sounds like yours was on all the time? The former owner of my truck spent the big bucks ($100) to get a correctly sized Jacobs pull knob switch to go right on the stick shift. Wonderful for control in the mountains, or additional braking...

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission For the 2nd gen 24 valve guys

It's a decent deal. Just plan on "unfixing" any other stuff his friends worked on.
