    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

Good morning Fellas, I thought I'd update the thread and let you know that I finally was able to get the parts needed and trans back in the truck. Thanks also to GAmes for sending me his spare flexplate he had, much appreciated! It took me a bit to find missing hardware and piece it all back...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

Funny that you mention that....a trusted mechanic quoted that repair back in 2017 for a couple grand. I was expecting to see it leaking. Actually, I'm disappointed to loose his trust.

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

Wow, thank you for the generous offer GAmes. I'll let you know if I need you to ship to southern WI. I'm still evaluating the investment with addressing the transmission rebuild/replacement. I need to seriously consider the life of the trans while it's out. I've had a rebuilt trans from...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

The truck has to come off their lift today to free up space. Thank you for giving my situation another look.

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

Mechanic never quoted parts and labor. Just labor to remove and expose damage. ($500) Mechanic also said that the housing between engine and trans should be replaced. I shouldn’t have assumed that he’d do all the repairs. He was just interested in the disassembly. I have the space and the...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

Happy Sunday! Trans is out. Bad flexplate, torque convertor, starter bendix, and broke a trans line on removal. Mechanic told me that it's not worth repairing. He won't put it back together or put in new parts. Says I'd be upside down in it. So, I'm questioning the future of this truck...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

The truck is not a show queen but it has always received better than OEM parts. I've always tried to keep the drive train in optimal condition. The suspension and front end have been updated over the years. I even have a Thuren Trac bar installed with newer steering components. The interior...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

Would it be foolish for me to put in a quality flexplate and TC without updating my original transmission? I don't tow with it anymore, so it gets minimal heavy use. But for the sake of the next owner and reliability, I'd like to be proactive while it's in the shop.

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

No Budget, as of now. I have to pay for the trans removal and inspection before I can decide on numbers. I've had the shifting trans problem for over 75K miles, so I have to decide if I should do trans work while its being removed. I've heard good things about Goerend trans products though.

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

Thanks BigPapa. I wish I could put the best in, but before this incident my trans had trouble shifting from 3-4th gear without letting off the accelerator. So I might have to contemplate a rebuilt trans as well. All for a pretty rusty truck too! I drive it like a soccer mom these days to keep...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

This is a sticky question: What is a decent flexplate and torque convertor that won't break the bank?

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

Pulled off inspection plate on the transmission bell housing, found shavings/debris/chewed up bolts in there. Rotated flywheel with crowbar and more bolts and debris started dropping. This seems to be a better scenario than internal engine component failure. I guess the back of the engine...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

I'll give that a try and see if I can find anything. I thought I had the KDP addressed years ago, but the noises that I heard could correlate to that failure.

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

Yes, I checked the fluids for contaminants and didn't see any metal shavings or anything out of the norm. All fluid levels were where they should be. I had a little over 2000 miles on an Amsoil oil/filter and fuel filter change.

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killed the Cummins 12 valve

1997 Cummins 12 valve Auto with 275K miles all stock besides intake and 5" exhaust. Truck was driven on the interstate at 80 mph for 2.5 hours. As I pulled off the exit, I heard a noisy clanking from the truck while idling at the stop light. I then pulled over, couldn't see any leaking and...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Alternator / GEN Dash Light

Good morning, Just wanted to update all of you with my truck. When stuff works you tend to forget about the people that helped you get it working. So, thanks for all of you who helped me in this thread. I installed a brand new alternator and the voltage went right back to 14v +/- The Gen...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Alternator / GEN Dash Light

I's a new alternator. Napa lists this in the description: Part #: NRO 1N8615Brand: NAPA "Alternator - New,Nippondenso Type; w/ 120 Amp Alternator; w/ 8 Groove Pulley"

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Alternator / GEN Dash Light

Well, I just checked the voltage. Just over 12.08v before, just above 10.42 while cranking, and then 11.82 while running. I'm ordering the new alternator from Napa. It's not a Denso, but "Denso Type" whatever that means. Let me know if there are better options out there. The original Denso...
