Just curious what the backspacing is on the '01 16x8 alloy wheels?

I'm wondering because I'm thinking about putting a 16x8 wheel on my 96 that has the stock 16x6. 5. I'm not too concerned with putting undue stress on the suspension (ball joints), but am curious what if DC did anything different to put a 16x8 wheel on.

I know it is a little more than the 16. 5's because the '01 alloy 16x8's won't fit on a older truck with the larger brake drums.

Thanks for the info,
Ryan

It's been a while since I had both the 16x8 and 16x6. 5 wheels sitting side by side... but I remember the 01 style 16x8 has about a 6-3/16" backspacing,and the 16x6. 5 was almost 4-1/2".

Yeah,I remember it being over six inches. I have a spare wheel sitting at work, when I go in tonight I measure it and give an exact figure. That's the reason the factory 16x8 hits the drums if you try putting it on an older truck. Also,I forgot to mention in past posts, that this deep offset also makes the wheel hit the tie rods on an older truck when you make sharp turns.

Mike has it right. I just measured one of the extra forged 16x8 wheels I have for 2000-2001 2500's and came up with 6 1/4 inches.

Ryan, Just curious... why do you want to change? Do you feel better mileage will result from this investment? Dave

I'm not quite sure this is the same but I've been looking at aftermarket wheels and most only have a 4. 5" backspace. If the stock 01 wheels have a 6. 25" backspace, am I understanding right that the aftermarkets will push the tires out 1. 75" each side? Is this hard on front end components or wheels? Anybody done this to an 01 and would it make it look goofy with only 285's? Know any good wheels with a close to stock backspace? I know, too many questions again. Can't help it #ad
Thanks alot, Doug

Doug,
You are right about the 1. 75".
It is harder on the front end suspension components. How much? Most likely it isn't enough to matter.
Sorry, I can't help you on finding a wheel with over 6" backspacing.

A few reasons:

1. Potentially better mileage (not really a factor in my decision)
2. The steel Dodge wheels are junk. I haven't checked mine to see how true they are, but I know many of them were built poorly.
3. Larger tires. I'd like to run a 305/70's and on a 6. 5" wheel they will baloon out in the middle too much. The 6. 5" wheels are ok for my winter 255/85 tires but not for a 305/70 (IMO).

As I said I have a little bit of concern with putting undue stress on the suspension, but my main concern it putting the wheels/tires well outside the fenders. Yes I know I can get fender flares and Ii probably eventually will.

I was just wondering how DC handled putting a wider rim on the truck.

Thanks for the help,
Ryan
